The ECHR awarded 26 thousand euros to the family of the prisoner who committed [Roskomnadzor] in the Novosibirsk colony

The ECHR awarded 26 thousand euros to the family of convicted Sergei Antonov, who was found hanged in IK-8 in Novosibirsk, according to the court’s website.

The wife, daughter and mother-in-law of the convicted person will receive compensation. The ECHR also ordered Russia another 3 thousand euros to compensate for legal costs. The victims demanded to pay them 100 thousand euros.

The European Court found that the Russian authorities violated Antonov's right to life and did not conduct a sufficient investigation into the circumstances of his death.

Antonov died in July 2007. He was placed in a punishment cell for smoking in the wrong place, the prisoner began to complain of a headache, the doctor managed to transfer the prisoner to another room, where he was alone. The next morning, Antonov was found hanging from a sheet; death, according to the official version, was due to asphyxia.

“In addition to the strangulation groove on the neck of the corpse characteristic of suicide, the forensic expert recorded bruises behind the left ear, in the area of ​​the right eye, on the right cheek and on the right side of the lower jaw. The cellmates said that Antonov had no reason to commit suicide,” noted the human rights organization “Zone of Law.”

The relatives of the deceased tried unsuccessfully for several years to get a criminal case initiated, the refusal of which was eventually recognized as legal by the Novosibirsk Regional Court, RAPSI recalls .

After this, they appealed to the ECHR; the court communicated the complaint of the Antonov family in December 2014.
