The Supreme Court reduced the sentence of a 70-year-old Nizhny Novgorod resident convicted of promoting terrorism by five months.

The Supreme Court reduced the term of imprisonment to five years and one month for 70-year-old Nizhny Novgorod resident Tagir Khasanov, convicted on charges of assisting a terrorist organization and storing ammunition, reports . RAPSI

The press service of the court noted that the sentence was commuted specifically under Article 222 of the Criminal Code (illegal possession of ammunition), otherwise it was upheld.

The visiting panel of the Moscow District Military Court in July sentenced Khasanov to five and a half years in prison. According to investigators, the pensioner persuaded his tenant, Ingushetian Bogdan Umarov, to go to Syria to fight on the side of the Islamic State.

During the arrest, five bloody cartridges, three religious brochures and a disk with pornography were found in the apartment. At the trial, the investigation presented testimony from witnesses, but, according to lawyer Marat Ashimov, some witnesses considered these testimonies to be inaccurate.

Thus, Umarov’s former cohabitant “at the trial, she actually admitted that she had slandered her grandfather,” the lawyer argued. According to the defense, the cartridges were planted in the apartment by law enforcement officers: Ashimov noticed that a month before Khasanov’s arrest, police officers came to the apartment in search of Umarov.
