1991 Dissolution of the KGB of the USSR

25 years ago, on December 3, 1991, the Council of the Republics of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR adopted the law "On the reorganization of state security agencies." He ordered "to abolish the State Security Committee of the USSR and for a transitional period to form on its basis on the rights of the central bodies of state administration of the USSR: the Inter-Republican Security Service, the Central Intelligence Service of the USSR, the Committee for the Protection of the State Border of the USSR with the Joint Command of the Border Troops." Local security agencies were transferred to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Union republics.
