Rock musician Boris Grebenshchikov supported the human rights campaign “Marathon of Letters” , organized by Amnesty International, reports the Social Information Agency. The musician signed a petition in support of prisoners of conscience, and also wrote a separate message to activist Ildar Dadin, who was convicted of “repeated violation of the rules for holding a public event.”
“We are thinking about you - and may the situation with you soon change for the better, and you will be free,” Grebenshchikov wrote.
On November 1, the activist’s wife said that employees of Segezha Correctional Colony No. 7 were torturing Dadin, beating him and threatening to kill him. The FSIN denies the activist's statements about torture; the Investigative Committee also reported that the information about torture has not been confirmed. On November 5, it became known that Dadin was transferred to a colony in another region.
Amnesty International's Letter Marathon campaign runs from 2 to 16 December. As part of the campaign, hundreds of thousands of people from around the world will send letters in support of prisoners of conscience. In 2016, the marathon was opened by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, who supported Amnesty International's call to send messages to the American authorities in support of Edward Snowden.
In 2016, Amnesty International called for support for activists from Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey, China, Indonesia, Egypt, Peru, Cameroon and Malawi, as well as Indigenous Peoples of the Peace River Valley in Canada.
Last year, Amnesty International supporters around the world wrote more than 3.7 million emails, letters, text messages and tweets during the Letter Marathon in support of 12 individuals, families and communities affected by human rights abuses.
According to human rights activists, the annual “Letter Marathon” campaign leads to positive results: in 2016, activists were released in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mexico, Myanmar and the United States.
