The roof of a church under construction collapsed in Nigeria. 160 parishioners died

In the southern Nigerian city of Uyo, a roof collapsed during a church service under construction on December 10.

As a result, at least 160 people died, according to the Associated Press, citing the director of a local hospital. According to Al-Jazeera, local authorities report the death of 60 people, and the Nigerian News Agency - "between 50 and 200 people."

At the time of the collapse, the church was being consecrated as a bishop by the founder of the local Protestant church that owns the building. The ceremony was attended by the governor of the state of Akwa Ibom Odom Emmanuel, he was not injured.

Emmanuel has declared two days of mourning in the state, according to the Nigerian News Agency. He also ordered the arrest of the contractor who was building the church.
