The elected US President Donald Trump nominated the chairman of the Board of Directors and Executive Director of the Exxonmobil Oil company Rex Tillerson to the post of Secretary of State. This was reported by Bloomberg with reference to the official statement of Trump's transition team.
The candidacy of Tillerson, who is called the "friend of Vladimir Putin", will still have to approve the Senate. As stated in the statement of Trump’s headquarters, Tillerson, according to the intention of the elected president, will have to "strengthen the stability of the region and focus on the key interests of the United States in terms of national security."
Despite Tillerson’s lack of diplomatic experience, Trump’s statement notes his “perseverance, rich experience and deep understanding of geopolitics”.
Tillerson worked with Russia for many years. He is a gentleman of the Russian Order of Friendship handed to him by Putin. Observers note that because of this, senators may disapprovingly relate to his candidacy.
The day before, Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov spoke about the relationship of the Russian president with Tillerson. “They had business meetings. Indeed, the president (Vladimir Putin) took Mr. Tillerson several times, including along with his then partners in the Russian Federation,” said Y Peskov, answering the question of whether the Russian leader with the entrepreneur is familiar.
Peskov again stated that in Moscow they were counting on the constructive attitude and professionalism of the future Secretary of State of the United States, whoever was appointed to this position.
"As for the allegations that he is good or bad about the Russian Federation - it is a big difference - to be a Secretary of State and even a very large company to lead. Therefore, we, let’s say, are certainly receded to the background," said the press secretary of the Russian president.
