The imam of the Moscow Yardyam mosque has his house arrest extended

On December 20, the Butyrsky District Court of Moscow extended the period of house arrest for 15 days to the imam of the metropolitan Yardyam mosque, Makhmud Velitov, who is accused of publicly justifying terrorism. This was reported by Interfax with reference to the lawyer of Imam Dagir Khasavov.

He told the publication that some investigative actions were planned for today with the participation of his client. Mahmud Velitov will remain under house arrest until at least January 12.

Mahmud Velitov was detained on July 11 and placed under house arrest, because, according to investigators, on September 23, 2013, he publicly delivered a speech in a mosque justifying the activities of activist Abdulla Gappaev, who was killed in Kizlyar. Gappaev was suspected of involvement in the activities of Hizb ut-Tahrir, an organization that is recognized as a terrorist organization in the Russian Federation and banned, according to human rights activists, without reason.
