Direct mayoral elections were canceled in Voronezh

United Russia deputies Alexander Golovin, Nikolai Grebenkin and Oleg Zakharov acted as the initiators of the amendments to the city charter. "For" the abolition of direct elections of the mayor voted 27 deputies (out of 33 present). At the same time, according to Kommersant, all the opposition present - four communists and two representatives of the Liberal Democratic Party - spoke out "against".

The issue of canceling the elections was submitted to the City Duma at the end of October and caused serious controversy among the deputies. Then United Russia declared that the innovation, firstly, would save budgetary funds, and, secondly, would contribute to the fact that a "professional" would take the mayor's chair. At the same time, opponents from the opposition noted that United Russia itself recognizes the professionalism of the incumbent mayor.
