GITIS students went out to protest. University management called the police

On December 23, students of the Russian Institute of Theatrical Art - GITIS staged a performance against the merger of the theater and production departments, which was initiated by the rector Grigory Zaslavsky.

A performance dedicated to the rights of students was held in the courtyard of the building. According to RBC, the secretary of the rector of GITIS Elvira Karyagina came out to the students, urged them to disperse and threatened the police. The police arrived, but did not stay near the institute for long.

Grigory Zaslavsky said he did not know about this action, but announced that the dean of the theater department, Natalya Pivovarova, would leave her post because she supported the protests of the students. “She will no longer be the dean - I guarantee you that,” Zaslavsky said.

“We just wanted to remind about our rights, read out the charter, which says that students have the right to participate in the life of the university,” the student said. The Charter of GITIS enshrined the rights of students to appeal against any local acts at the university, as well as to participate "in shaping the content of their professional education."

Many students and critics spoke out against the merger of the faculties, calling the actions of the leadership the actual destruction of the theater department.
