S7 Airlines, a member of the oneworld global aviation alliance ® , will replenish its fleet with Embraer 170-LR aircraft in 2017. A new type of aircraft is being introduced to implement the program for the development of interregional air transportation.
A lease agreement for 17 Embraer 170-LRs has been signed with the leasing company GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS). S7 Airlines will become the first operator of this type of aircraft in Russia. It is expected that the first aircraft will enter the S7 Airlines fleet in the spring of 2017, and during 2017 the airline will receive all 17 aircraft.
The aircraft are designed to carry 78 passengers in a spacious and comfortable economy class cabin.
“Obtaining Embraer 170-LR aircraft will allow us to actively develop interregional air transportation. We see great potential in this segment. Now air transportation is concentrated in Moscow, and often passengers from the cities of the Urals to the Far East are forced to fly with a transfer in the capital. The first Embraers will be based at Novosibirsk's Tolmachevo airport, which is well located to connect regions more efficiently. The new type of airliners will also allow us to open flights from small, including hard-to-reach cities, where the use of medium-haul aircraft is impossible,” said Vladimir Obyedkov, CEO of S7 Airlines.
“The delivery of the E170 to the S7 Airlines fleet is the result of a thorough analysis of the growing needs of the airline,” said Alec Berger, President and CEO of GECAS. “The Embraer 170 is highly cost-effective and is a great fit for S7 Airlines to develop air transportation in the Russian market.”
“We welcome S7 Airlines as a member of the growing family of Embraer E-Jets aircraft operators,” says Arjen Meyer, Commercial Director of Embraer Civil Aviation. “We are very pleased to see that the E170 will fly with one of the largest Russian airlines, helping to expand the route network throughout Russia.”
As part of the program, S7 Airlines plans to develop regional flights, primarily from Novosibirsk and Moscow. Embraer will be used on both existing and new regional routes. For example, new flights are planned to be opened from Novosibirsk to Krasnoyarsk, Surgut, Nizhnevartovsk, Novy Urengoy, Chelyabinsk, Perm, to the cities of Kazakhstan, and in the future to hard-to-reach cities such as Kyzyl, Noyabrsk, Khanty-Mansiysk and others. Residents of these cities will have the opportunity to travel on the flights of a major Russian airline on modern aircraft.
The airline is preparing to receive a new type of aircraft - it is recruiting pilots to work on the Embraer 170. The first groups of pilots and flight attendants are already being trained. In total, by the end of 2017, it is planned to commission about 50 flight crews.
