FSB and GRU came under US sanctions due to cyber attacks

The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions against the Federal Security Service and the Main Intelligence Directorate of Russia, according to the department's website.

Three companies were sanctioned that, according to American intelligence services, contributed to GRU cyber operations - ANO PO KSI , LLC Special Technology Center and the TsOR security group , also known as Esage Lab .

Restrictive measures also apply to six people, including the head of the GRU Igor Korobov and his subordinates Vladimir Alekseev, Sergei Gizunov and Igor Kostyukov.

In addition, the sanctions affected two Russian hackers: Evgeny Bogachev and Alexey Belan. Their nicknames are given: Lastik, lucky12345, Monstr, Pollingsoon and Slavik for the first and Abyrvalg, Anthony Anthony, Fedyunya, M4G for the second.

In addition, as reported by Reuters, the United States will send 35 Russian intelligence operatives , and will close two Russian facilities in New York and Maryland that were used for intelligence-related purposes. The Russians were given 72 hours to leave the country.

The new sanctions are related to cyber attacks that posed “a threat to the national security, foreign policy and economic welfare or financial stability of the United States,” the US Treasury explains.

CNN warned about the impending sanctions a day earlier, citing sources, and Republican US Senator Lindsey Graham argued that these measures “would hurt both Russia and Putin.”
