Interfax: Aviaman "Admiral Kuznetsov" and cruiser "Peter the Great" in January can be returned from Syria to their homeland

Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier and atomic missile cruiser Peter the Great can already be returned from the coast of Syria in the Mediterranean Sea to the main base of the Northern Fleet of Russia in Severomorsk, Interfax reports with reference to an informed source.

"It is expected that in January" Admiral Kuznetsov and Peter the Great "will complete the long campaign and go to their native shores," the agency’s interlocutor said.

In December, it was reported that the cruiser will return to Severomorsk by February 9, Rosbalt notes.

Now in the Mediterranean Sea there is a Russian ship aircraft carrier shock group, led by a heavy atomic missile cruiser Peter the Great. The group includes, in particular, the cruiser Admiral Kuznetsov, the large anti-submarine ships Severomorsk, Vice Admiral Kulakov and the Frigate Admiral Grigorovich.

On December 29, 2016, Russian Minister of Defense Sergei Shoigu, at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, said that the truce in Syria created opportunities to reduce the Russian group of troops, and Putin agreed with this proposal.

Deck fighters from Admiral Kuznetsov were first involved in November 15. Two losses of Russian military aviation are connected with this: the MiG-29K, which fell while trying to sit down on November 13 due to the refusal of both engines, and the Su-33, which fell on December 3 from the aircraft carrier’s deck due to the breakdown of the aerofinisher caused by the pilot’s mistake.
