The Ministry of Defense announced the return of Admiral Kuznetsov from Syria

Russia has begun to reduce the armed forces group in Syria, first the country's aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, the cruiser Peter the Great and the ships accompanying them will be left. This was announced to journalists by the chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Army General Valery Gerasimov, Interfax reports.

“In accordance with the decision of the Supreme Commander -in -Chief of the RF Armed Forces, Vladimir Putin, the Russian Ministry of Defense, begins to reduce the armed forces group in Syria,” he said.

As Gerasimov specified, the alarm group of the RF Armed Forces, headed by Admiral Kuznetsov, will leave Syria on Friday, January 6.

Earlier, Interfax, citing its source, reported that Admiral Kuznetsov and Peter the Great will complete the campaign in the Mediterranean Sea in January 2017. The cruisers should return to the main base of the Northern Fleet of Russia, which is located in Severomorsk.

Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to reduce the grouping of Russian troops in Syria on December 29. The head of the Ministry of Defense Sergei Shoigu noted that now all the conditions have been created for this.

Admiral Kuznetsov is the only aircraft carrier in the Russian Navy. It was sent to Syria as part of the ship’s aircraft carrier group on October 15.
