The detective who caught Chikatilo does not believe the confessions of the maniac-militia Popkov: "So many women cannot be killed!"

Former Soviet investigator Vladimir Kalinichenko, who was engaged in the criminal case of Chikatilo, commented on the Moscow Komsomol member in connection with the resonant publications in the press about the investigation of the atarsor of the Angarsk police officer Mikhail Popkov . A retired detective does not believe that the law enforcement officer could kill about 80 women. According to Kalinichenko, maniacs tend to exaggerate their role.

“The maniac has a special property - he fully gives his actions to his actions, but cannot control them. Kalinichenko also believes that a serial killer may not remember all his victims immediately after the detention. Recall that the retired officer of the Ministry of Internal Affairs from the Angarsk of the Irkutsk region Mikhail Popkov two years ago received a life sentence for 22 murders and two attempts on women associated with rape. Police and taxi driver - "convenient" professions for the killer

The serial killer in police uniform Mikhail Popkov terrified Angarsk for more than 20 years. As follows from the results of the first investigation, in 1994-2000 in the public places of Angarsk "under unidentified circumstances in the evening and night, women disappeared." Subsequently, their bodies with signs of rape and violent death were found in the city, as well as the Angarsk, Usolsky and Irkutsk regions.

The dead were mainly young women aged 18 to 28 years. Almost all the victims at the time of the murder were drunk, emphasized in the police. Their naked bodies were found near Angarsk in the forests adjacent to country roads in city cemeteries.

Most of the victims died from wounds on the spot, three more died in the hospital. The "Angarsk maniac" killed the girls using an ax, knife, awl or screwdrivers, delivering at least a dozen strokes. He also used a stray. One of the victims the policeman cut out his heart.

Usually, women who returned from guests or bars, as well as leaving the house to the store for alcohol, became the victims of the criminal.

"In the sole case when the victim was sober, she was not raped. The victim was first strangled by a scarf, the knife strokes were already inflated dead," the police said.

The policeman was involved in three double murders, and he committed another eight crimes while on duty. In one of the episodes, Popkov left a police token at the crime scene, returned after him and finished off the victim.

Note that Popkov worked as a taxi driver. This profession helped him make random acquaintances with women, and then attack them in deserted places. And the police uniform contributed to the fact that the victims were imbued with confidence in Popkov and gave up suspicions from him. By the way, the police leadership knew that Popkov was working as a taxi driver, but this did not cause any suspicions, and the movement of the guard of order was not linked with the detection of corpses.

It is difficult to talk about the motives of the policeman-killer. Popkov himself later said in court: "When committing murders, I was guided by my internal beliefs."

During the first trial, he also tried to expose himself to the role of a "orderly" that saves society from immoral women. As a result, Popkov was nicknamed the "cleaner."

However, many of the victims of the maniac were not like prostitutes.

“I just launched the disease, tried to be treated on my own, I was afraid to go to the hospital. The consequences made myself felt, I became impotent,” the suspect told the investigators. “After that, the desire to rape and kill was lost.”

In the summer of 2000, the investigation of unsolved murders in Angarsk was engaged in the criminal prosecutor Nikolai Kitaev. He came to the conclusion that the investigation was carried out poorly. In particular, on January 28, 1998, a naked minor girl was found unconscious near the village of Baikalsk. She was hospitalized with her head injuries, which the unknown to her caused her.

The victim Svetlana M. identified the policeman-driver of the Angarsk Internal Affairs Directorate in the rank of senior sergeant. The next day, out of three UAZ-469 cars presented to her, Svetlana confidently pointed to the sergeant’s official car: she remembered several characteristic details of the cabin.

However, investigators limited themselves to Popkov’s explanation, according to which he simply looks like a criminal. Alibi of the policeman was formally confirmed by his roommate.

Kitaev noted that the sergeant "drunk and leaned, infected his wife with syphilis, from whom both were treated." And their marriage was terminated.

Kitaev reported on his conclusions to the prosecutor of the Irkutsk region Merzlyakov and promised to find the killer for six months if he was allowed to head the investigation. However, the leadership decided to lower the case on the brakes. "Everything that was discussed here should not go beyond this office. Otherwise, Moscow raises us all," Merzlyakov said.

A year later, Kitaev was fired. Formally, this was due to the disbandment of transport prosecutors. In 2001, the investigation was suspended de facto.

The case was resumed in 2002, the search for the killer lasted another 10 years. According to the former senior operator for particularly important matters, Sergei Derzhavin, who headed the group, the Minister of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (then Boris Gryzlov) instructed him to investigate after the appearance of the crime, Nikolai Kitaev. The group worked in the Irkutsk region, simultaneously revealing many other things. In 2009, investigators conducted an examination of sperm strokes discovered in the body of several victims, and narrowed the circle of suspects up to 589 people, including Popkov. Of the internal affairs bodies, Popkov quit in 1998 as soon as he received the title of junior lieutenant. While retired, the officer worked in a private security company. From there he quit in 2011, after which he worked as a burialist and private taxi driver. By the way, the father and father of Mikhail Popkov earned his graves with digging graves. He also took his son to the assistants, so the future maniac digging burials from the age of eight, RIA Novosti reports.

According to one version, Popkov could have accomplices. In particular, the wife of the ex-police officer Elena came under suspicion. The case himself also said that he was allegedly not alone. However, he refused to name the name of the accomplice.

After the detention of Popkov, the police decided not to attach great importance to the fact that the maniac worked in the Ministry of Internal Affairs. "Now it is not so important who, in the end, the offender will ultimately turn out to be: the former policeman, military, doctor or someone else. The main thing is that the principle of inevitability of punishment works," the press release of the department said.

During the first trial and immediately after the sentence, the wife and adult daughter of Popkov supported him, went on dates, wore programs. They also performed in the television show "Let them talk" on Channel One. The wife and daughter were recognized in the love of Popkov and demonstrated faith in his innocence.

To date, both women left Angarsk, where Popkov’s daughter worked as a school teacher.
