Representative of the Central Bank of Mongolia: There will be no problems with financing the construction of the hydroelectric power station

Mongolia counts on import substitution in the energy sector. According to a member of the Board of the Central Bank of Mongolia Chulundorge Hashchulun, there will be no problems with financing projects in this area.

The representative of the Central Bank of Mongolia in an interview with the Buryat site Inform Police commented on the financial situation around the country's energy projects.

Answering the question about the possibility of receiving financial assistance from the IMF and other financial organizations for projects of the hydroelectric power station, a member of the Board of the Central Bank said that such support is not “absolute necessity”.

“Hydroelectric power station or other investment projects are not directly related to the IMF. And even, as I said, help from the fund would be desirable, but not an absolute necessity, ”he explained. - For example, two hydroelectric power stations are already being built and successfully working. Another in the west of the country is being built, a number of hydroelectric power stations are designed. This is primarily necessary to stabilize water flows, prevent spring floods and more rational use of water resources. In terms of financing, I do not see any special problems, especially since now the country pays a lot of money for the import of electricity. ”

“These and other projects, for example, the coal station in Tavantolga, will successfully carry out import substitution in the energy region,” added Chuluntorge Hashchulouun.

As Taiga.info previously reported, Mongolia is going to build hydroelectric power stations on the Selenga - the main source of water intake in Baikal (provides up to 80% of the flow of water into the lake) and its tributaries. The plans for the near future are the Schuren hydroelectric power station on the Selenga itself, as well as the “Egine-Gol” (315 MW) and “Orkhon” (100 MW) on the river tributaries of the same name. Ecologists and authorities of Russia are afraid that the construction and work of stations will lead to the destruction of the unique ecosystem of the Selenga Delta, which is included in the list of natural objects of planetary significance, deterioration of water quality in Lake Baikal and its shallowing.

While financing of projects has been frozen, Russia has also managed to achieve the consent of Mongolia to hold public consultations on hydroelectric power stations in the territory of Buryatia and the Irkutsk region. However, the time of their implementation has not yet been assigned, despite the fact that the World Bank intending to sponsor project development has already published data on the request for proposals for technical and economic rationale, regional-ecological assessment and assessment of the environmental impact on the hydraulic system on the selent and reservoirs on the Orchon. The bank claims that so far we are talking about preliminary competitions, and the purchases themselves will be carried out taking into account the opinions of Russians received at public hearings.
