The British company FabRx presented its new development at the Dubai Health Forum conference in Dubai - a 3D printer that allows you to print medicines according to individual patient prescriptions, The National UAE reports . Representatives of the Dubai Health Department intend to soon introduce this technology in residential buildings.
The technology is aimed mainly at the treatment of chronic diseases. Pharmacists will prepare a dose of medicine in advance for each fiber - the raw material that the printer will use as a blank for printing tablets. These blanks will be supplied to hospitals, where they will be able to print drugs using their own 3D printers.
“Hospitals are not involved in the production of drugs, but this technology will allow medical centers to manage their production process,” says Goyanes, the company’s development director. “If used correctly, this method will be cheaper and faster for patients.”
Since such fiber is difficult to replicate, it will reduce the frequency of drug counterfeiting, the developers believe. This will also reduce the cost of expensive drugs, in particular those used in the treatment of cancer.
“Our idea is to bring technology to hospitals, clinics and homes,” commented Alvaro Goyanes. “Ultimately, we want to ensure that the written prescription is sent to people’s homes, and they can use it to print their own medicines on a printer. Patients will be able to print out the dose or combination of medications they need for themselves.”
The company offers control over the printing of medicines at home using codes and passwords similar to those used by banks.
The technology has already been tested on animals. Developers must obtain appropriate permission to test 3D-printed drugs on humans within two years.
Despite the lack of approval and difficulties in bringing 3D printers to market, doctors at the Dubai Health Department hope to soon make this technology available to residents of the capital.
Earlier it became known that Chinese scientists are developing technology for producing skin similar to human skin using a 3D printer. Developers have already learned how to make solid prosthetics using 3D printers, but are not yet able to create such flexible structures as human skin.
