A protest rally took place in St. Petersburg against the transfer of St. Isaac's Cathedral to the Russian Orthodox Church

An uncoordinated protest rally against the transfer of St. Isaac's Cathedral to the Russian Orthodox Church took place on St. Isaac's Square in St. Petersburg. According to Rosbalt, about 500 people gathered for the rally.

The action was held in the format of a meeting of protesters with members of the legislative assembly - Maxim Reznik, Boris Vishnevsky and Alexei Kovalev, as well as PARNAS co-chairman in St. Petersburg Andrei Pivovarov.

“It is very important that such different people gathered at this event. I believe that this activity has potential, we will definitely hold actions, performances, file a lawsuit, maybe even initiate a referendum,” Andrey Pivovarov shared his plans.

Deputy from the Party of Growth Maxim Reznik proposed to dismiss the governor of the city Georgy Poltavchenko. Aleksey Kovalev, leader of the Just Russia faction, said that he "does not feel sorry for dismissing anyone who decided to take Isaac from the city."

Recall that on January 10, the Governor of St. Petersburg, Georgy Poltavchenko, announced that he had made the final decision to transfer the St. Isaac's Cathedral State Museum-Monument.

The Union of Museum Workers of St. Petersburg opposed the transfer of St. Isaac's Cathedral to the use of the Russian Orthodox Church. In their statement, they called the memorial museum one of the most visited in the country. The workers also noted that the museum complex was visited by 3.8 million people last year, but the divine services that take place in Isaac twice a day are not popular with believers.
