“Food Fund “Rus”” distributed five thousand tons of food to those in need in a year

In 2016, the charitable “Food Fund “Rus”” distributed more than five million kilograms of food free of charge to the poor from 52 regions of Russia. TD was informed about this by the organization’s press service.

The list of goods donated to people included cereals, butter, dairy products, canned food, tea, juices, baby purees, meat and fish. In addition, the foundation donated essential personal hygiene products, household chemicals and diapers for children to those in need.

“In order to deliver products to distribution points, we mainly use the services of paid vehicles; we transport milk and frozen formulas, and fish using refrigerated trucks. Volunteers also help a lot; every month they participate in food packaging in different cities, collect goods with us in stores, and also go to the outback to visit elderly people, who often need not only food, but also communication,” said the head of the foundation. According to representatives of the charitable organization, in 2017 the foundation, in particular, will search for regional producers who will be able to donate surplus food to those in need. According to statistics, more than 20% of the total volume of food produced in Russia is destroyed every year. The foundation’s employees hope that the new program will help “revive the tradition of caring for food, rooted in Rus' since time immemorial.”

The charitable organization “Food Fund “Rus”” is the first food bank in Russia. Manufacturers can at any time transfer to the fund goods with an expiring shelf life (up to five days), as well as batches of products with an error in the label and other defects. In addition, in retail chains, volunteers invite all visitors to make an individual donation, for example, a pack of buckwheat or pasta. The fund organizes the distribution of assistance through social services, church parishes and private non-profit organizations.

On July 29, 2015, a decree “On certain special economic measures applied to ensure the security of the Russian Federation” was signed. In accordance with the document, products from countries subject to counter-sanctions are to be destroyed. On the anniversary of the signing of the decree, we calculated how many products were destroyed in order to ensure the security of the state.

A UN report on food resource use states that about 40% of food produced in the United States ends up in the trash. In Europe, 100 million tons of food are wasted every year. At the same time, the number of hungry people in the world has reached a billion people.
