
The European parliament at the first meeting in 2017 elected a new chairman. It was the Italian conservative politician Antonio Taiani, former spokesman Silvio Berlusconi. Taiani said he wanted to become a representative for the entire European Parliament, including small factions, DW reports.
At Taiani at the meeting on January 17, 351 parliamentarians voted, while his rival, the Italian Social Democrat Gianni Pitell, supported 282 deputies.
Before the meeting, Taiani stated that he refused the output of two million euros, which are laid for him as the ex-Jewish Commissioner for Industry and Entrepreneurship. "I consider it completely unfair to receive this allowance in a situation where so many European citizens are suffering," RIA Novosti quotes him.
