About 60 percent of the old city of Aleppo is badly damaged, a third of the city was completely destroyed, the UNESCO commander said after the visit of the organization’s experts to Syria.
The UNESCO delegation visited the city from January 16 to 19 to assess the state of architectural monuments. Among the heavily injured buildings is the Aleppo citadel, built in the tenth century.
Aleppo suffered from massive bombing. Over the city for four years, the troops of Syrian President Bashar al -Assad and the formation of an armed opposition fought. In December last year, Aleppo was completely taken under the control of the Syrian government army.
