Vasily Rakitin died

January 24 in Paris at the age of 77, art critic Vasily Rakitin died.

Vasily Ivanovich Rakitin was born in 1939 in Moscow, studied at the department of the history and theory of art of the Faculty of History of Moscow State University (1957–1962) and in the graduate school of the Research Institute of Theory and History of Promising Problems of Soviet Architecture (1967–1970).

Since the mid-1960s he studied modernism and Russian avant-garde, was familiar with the collector Georgy Kostaki, and later was the organizer and curator of the exhibitions of the Russian avant-garde, including the exhibition “Great Utopia” and the exhibitions of Mark Shagal's works in Germany, Austria, Finland, Italy.

In 1992, he became the initiator of the RA publishing project (“Russian avant -garde”), prepared for him a series of memoirs of Russian avant -garde artists and monographs about Nikolai Suetin and Ilya Chashnik.

In recent years, together with Andrei Sarabyanov, he worked on the creation of the foundametal four -volume “Encyclopedia of the Russian Avangard”.
