How much does gender inequality cost?

Saudi Arabia is one of the world leaders to limit women's rights. In the rating of the gender gap, which is the World Economic Forum, it takes 141st out of 144. This is the only country in the world where women are forbidden to drive a car. The restrictions for women in the country relate to freedom of movement, access to public services, performances in court and much more.

An unusual combination of such a level of discrimination with high GDP (14th in the world by parity of purchasing power) makes Saudi Arabia the most obvious example of how sexuals are harming the economy. The share of working women in Saudi Arabia is about 20% : less than it was in the United States after the Second World War. For comparison: in Russia, according to 2014, the indicator was 57%, in Australia - 59%, in Iceland - 70%. According to the World Bank, it is included in the top 15 countries of the world, where it is most difficult for women to get a job or start their business.

VOX (albeit very approximately) calculated that the losses of the Saudi economy due to discrimination of women can be comparable to the country's revenue from the sale of oil, which in 2016 amounted to $ 87 billion.
