In May 2015, Kara-Murza Jr. was hospitalized at the First City Hospital in serious condition, where he was put into a state of medicated sleep. Doctors diagnosed him with “acute renal failure,” but he himself later turned to the Investigative Committee with a request to open a criminal case about his intentional poisoning.

In January 2016, it became known that a specialist from a French laboratory found that Kara-Murza Jr.’s body exceeded the permissible concentration of heavy metals. At the same time, the coordinator of Open Russia asked the Investigative Committee to conduct a comprehensive toxicological examination. In the end, no criminal case was initiated.
