Ivan Tolstoy: Our topic is a Jewish question today. For the first time, if I do not confuse, we are not turning to the individual, not to some person, not to the famous surname, not to the figure who approaches the profile of our program, but to a certain group of population-religious, cultural, social. And we will have to deal with you, willy-nilly, some generalization. What is extremely unpleasant, because although the trees are sometimes seductive to see the forest, and sometimes it is very useful and inevitable, but still we will face the fact that we bring a denominator to the fact that the heroes of our today's program, perhaps, did not want to bring just such a denominator, in any case, did not want to discuss in those days. But let's dwell not on the denominator, but on the numerator, on what is a Jewish question. How do you understand this term?
Andrei Gavrilov: Firstly, I want to say that this is not the first time when we moved away from personalities for the sake of phenomenon. Another thing is that, as you rightly noted, this is the first case in our dialogs, when this phenomenon is precisely ethnic, national, cultural, and not just cultural. We talked with you about different musical phenomena, about different other manifestations of dissent among groups of people, but from such an angle we approach this issue for the first time.
Secondly, in order to prevent the spiteful people to attach to us, I would like to say that, yes, we know that the term “Jewish question” has a very sad story, it was born in Nazi Germany in the 30s. We know what this led to - the “Jewish issue”, “Solution of the Jewish issue”, and so on. I want to repeat right away that we, of course, are ready to resolutely dissociate us with such an interpretation of our topic, although, oddly enough, in some ways that are the subject of our conversation, the power began to approach the question of Jews in our country in a dangerously familiar way, familiar precisely on the history of Nazi Germany. Thank God that this movement stopped on time, let's say.
And that's why we decided to talk about it. You probably remember, Ivan, we walked around this topic for quite some time, fearing it for somewhat, I didn’t even imagine how to approach it at all. In the end, than the Jewish question, from the point of view of formal logic, differs from the Chechen-Ingush question of the 70s, from the Karachay-Cherkess question or from the Kalmyk issue? I'm not talking about the Crimean Tatar question, which has recently aggravated again and appeared before us in all its terrible glory.
What is a Jewish question in the USSR? For me, this is not so much the movement within the Jewish population of the USSR, the movement for freedom, the movement for equal rights, although we will talk about it. It is interesting for me that this movement is completely unexpected for everyone, I believe, found a response, came around at another part of the population, who had no direct attitude to Jewry. It came in two ways. On the one hand, having generated the growth of anti -Semitism, such as they say, animal anti -Semitism, but here I am ready to subscribe to this template, under this formulation, and, on the other hand, giving rise to a wave of sympathy and support, even if these sympathy and support were for the sympathetic and supporting somewhat unexpected. I remember very well how I once caught a taxi in those years, I didn’t catch, I was brought by a garbage cleaning machine at three in the morning, I had to go through all of Moscow, and we talked with the driver. The conversation came about Jewish emigration, and the driver angrily told me: “How I hate Jews!” “Why?” I asked. “Yes, because they, reptiles, are standing for each other with a wall, they are ready at least on the embrasure, and we ...”, and spat on the window.
How to understand this? Is this a manifestation of anti -Semitism or, conversely, unconscious, frantic respect for Jews? I still do not know the answer to now.
Ivan Tolstoy: That's something like: well, you, a bastard, hell, talented! Is this a curse or a manifestation of the highest degree of admiration?
Andrei Gavrilov: Therefore, I would not want to discuss it now simply because it goes beyond our program and chronological, temporary, and any kind of - and the origin of anti -Semitism in our country, and its development, and, of course, we will mention the victims of this mood, but this, as it seems to me, should become the topic of our conversation. Here, for example, when you first suddenly realized that the concept of “Jewish question” exists? Not that they encountered Jews or heard the word “Jews”, and when you suddenly realized that something else is worth it, that maybe you (by age or not) is not entirely clear?
Ivan Tolstoy: I would say that something woke up in me (although it would seem to have fallen firmly and sound, because I am not a Jew, and if I have a part of Jewish blood, then it is so small that it does not contribute to my Jewish self-awareness), when I first saw an insult to one of my Jewish acquaintances. I do not remember a specific case at all, I can’t name the date, it was something in the high school of the school, this is the mid-70s. What it was connected with what it was - I do not remember. But at that moment I woke up immediately in me, as you know, at high speed showing the opening of the flower bud in documentary films, with the same fast, instant speed, sympathy for the persecuted and insulted, at that moment, I realized that I was not with a Russian person, but with my not even close acquaintance Jewish. At that moment, it woke up in me just as part of the general moral self -awareness and attitude to the world. But in your case, Andrey, how was it?
Andrei Gavrilov: I can’t name, like you, the exact number, but I can name exactly the moment when I realized that the Jewish question exists. I knew about the existence of Jews (this is a funny phrase, I say it specifically) somewhere starting about six years. This is another story where I learned this word, and now it does not apply to business. This word was not a surprise for me. There was about the fifth grade, in our class there was a man named Alyosha Kirpichnikov, we were born in the same day and therefore the whole class decided that we should be friends. We were not friends, but we were all the time to be on duty together, to fulfill some instructions together. Once we were on duty in the classroom and the teacher, who was in the last lesson, either in a hurry, or forgot, but the class magazine stayed on the table and we needed to take it to the teacher’s room, put it on a shelf. But since in the classroom journal behind the information was very interesting for fifth graders, namely the addresses, phones (if you did not know the phone of a girl, you could write it off from the magazine), the names and surnames of your parents, the profession of parents, then we are watching this list and suddenly Alesha says the phrase that I remembered from that second. He says: “Look, it is written that Lina Remnik is a Jewish, and I did not at all take worse.” And I remember how the phrase puzzled and cut me, the meaning of which was that, in principle, it turns out, we can relate worse to the lina's belt only because she is a Jewish. At that moment, I rather felt what I realized that there was a “Jewish question”, that there is something that I do not understand, but it is, here it is before me.
Then, much later, these terrible “enemy voices” began, which reported to me about the movement for emigration, then Samizdat, including the Jewish, came. And somehow it happened that in that stream of Samizdat, in which I had the happiness of being, they did not make much difference between the Jewish Samizdat, the Crimean Tatar, literary. I got into a stream, where there was simply an unpublished, prohibited literature and journalism, and I read everything that I came across, including, of course, of Samizdat materials dedicated to the problem of Jews in the USSR.
Then, much later, when I already knew what the refuseniks were and, in general, was, as they say now, “in the topic”, I was a witness to a fantastic story that I could not say that she strengthened my attitude or pushed me to something, because by this time I was already an established person, but she once again showed me the mood in the country. I remember how near Tass, at the Nikitsky gate, a demonstration of the Jews, who went with posters for the right of emigration, took place. I don’t know why they went to Tasu, probably because there were many propaganda materials through TASS. I did not see this demonstration itself, I just walked along the boulevard, and all this happened a few minutes before me, but they immediately dared the kagbeshniki, put them on buses, and the people who are interested, of course, ran up to the buses and began to read posters that the Kagabashniks to tear, spoil or hide did not have time. Through the bus window, they could be read. And so I go along the boulevard, two ladies go towards me and one friend indignantly says: “Well, you have to come up with! Human rights to Jews! ”
This phrase in me remains forever. For me, people who believe that human rights are impossible to Jews, these are people who have not been freed from ... (now I have come up with a scientific term, Ivan, you are a witness that I want to patent it) ... From subconscious fascism. Even if the closest neighbor on the landing is a Jewish, and we are very well divided by salt and run for flour to the store, even if, ah, I also have familiar Jews, what are you saying, whatever, if there is the slightest pause, the slightest dashing before the phrase “Human rights to Jews”, then for me this person’s issue was solved immediately and for all.
Ivan Tolstoy: It seems to me that it is time, just dramatic, to kill our conversation with some kind of musical work. Moreover, we discussed the topic of awakening in the society of this problem - both the problem itself and public attitude to it - but how did this affect the musical works? Well, at least our great bards?
Andrei Gavrilov: If I had my will, I would be the history of the USSR, at least starting from the years of the 1950-60s, wrote from Vysotsky’s songs. I would build his works not by the date of writing, but by the fact that this song tells. By the way, this is how the play “Vysotsky” was built, which the theater on Taganka showed after the death of the poet. At Vysotsky, the three most famous songs are devoted to the Jewish question, they are written at different times, and they very ridiculously reflect mood in society. There was a time when the word “Jew” denoted everything: he was not taken to work, he was a Jew. Everything was clear, nothing had to be discussed. Somehow, people hid their eyes, spoke a little lowering their voice. Then the period of more open anti -Semitism began, when: well, of course, he was not hired, he was a Jew. Or like that driver of my garbage truck. These three moods are very easy to trace through three songs by Vladimir Vysotsky, as it seems to me. The first is not even a song, but such a sketch, an unequal work that is clearly unfinished, but Vysotsky did not even return to her, he performed it once or twice, and she remained in the archives. This fragment "He was a surgeon, even neuro."
(Song)
To explain what I wanted to say, Vysotsky did not even consider it necessary - everything was clear to everyone. The luminary was a Jew.
Ivan Tolstoy: I liked Andrey, your immediately, on the air, the patented term “subconscious fascism”, and I want to give an example that came from the history of my family, an example of “subconscious fascism”. My mother was evacuated during the war. Dad was a physicist, worked at the university, and together with the university they were evacuated to the Volga. The father was sent to Yoshkar-Ola to urgent artillery courses, where he taught ballistics to those who after two-week training (at first it was two months, and then it turned in two weeks: in 1942 they simply went to the front and never returned). But someone had to train young commanders how to shoot, how to bring and how to get. And my mother stayed with children and her parents in Elabuga.
They arrived there about a month or a half after Marina Tsvetaeva committed suicide. They rented a room in a large hut, where the hostess and neighbor - academician Fichtengolts lived. They lived very well, there were friendly relations, the hostess left each time in the corridor, in the hallway, fresh milk, he herself made cheese, cottage cheese, cakes of baked, in general, she looked after those who had difficult conditions. And she helped my mother, and she looked after the academician of Fictending, who lived alone at that time (I don’t know if the family came to him later). And the attitude of this mistress to the old-academician was excellent, he was not tall, gray-haired, with a dressing beard and very much resembled an Orthodox priest. And then someone in the Obys whispered to the mistress of this house: “And the old man who lives with you is a Jew!” “How is a Jew?!”, - the hostess jumped. “But what about his last name-look! I peered here in the house book - Fichtengoltz. ” “Father -lights!” Thought this mistress. Arriving home, she knocked out a garbage bucket, in which there were liquid slop, and violently poured a bucket under the door of the academician of Fichtengoltz. So she showed her "subconscious fascism."
But my mother ended this story by the fact that the tragicomedy was that Academician Fichtengolts was not a Jew, he was German. But the instinct of this mistress was completely amazing. She, apparently, had never seen Jews in her Elabuga pre-war hole, and if they lived in the city, they did not take off any living space from her. Here is such a spontaneous, semi -shaped, in general, manifestation of anti -Semitism. Subconscious fascism.
Andrey Gavrilov: Ivan, sorry, for God's sake, I will kill you. I really liked the phrase "The tragedy that he was not a Jew."
Ivan Tolstoy: Tragicomedy, Andrey! Tragicomedy!
Andrei Gavrilov: She could be taken out by the epigraph to our conversation. But the fact that our people managed to hate Jews, not imagining what the word “Jew” means, what it is ... When it turned out that the closest neighbor is a Jew, it was generally some kind of blow! How? He is a decent person, it would be affected! How? And I left the children with him or her when I ran to the store! In general, it was a complete nightmare, such a discord of consciousness. And, by the way, there is a Vysotsky song about this, which I wanted to show you. It is called - "Anti -Semite's song."
(Song)
The song, it seems to me, can serve as an excellent illustration of the story that you told.
Ivan Tolstoy: Andrei, I would like to touch on the topic of the ratio of the opposition or dissident movement in the Soviet Union and the Jewish movement. Here, say, the manifestation of the "Jewish question" in action. Dissants and Jews. Now, if you ask the mistress of the Elabuga house, I think that she would say that dissidents are therefore opposed to the authorities, that the Jews, and every Jew, from her point of view, would probably be a dissident. But, nevertheless, it is really historically, really politically and ideologically, what is common and what is different between the Jewish movement and the dissident, human rights movement? So you said that the samizdat that you came across in your youth, he was not internally divided into Jewish samizdat and general. And what do you think now, looking back at those years, having read everything that you read, having your life considerable experience, how did the Jewish movement differ from the common -therapy?
Andrey Gavrilov: This is an interesting question. I’m trying to spark the answer now, so I can make some kind of mistake, reservation or forget something. But it seems to me that the dissident movement, of course, was much wider, and the proof of this may be the fact that is completely unthinkable for the inhabitants of the USSR in the late 70s, in the 80s, that some of our dissidents sent to the West continued to fight for human rights not only in the territory of the USSR. We have already mentioned that some of our heroes, which we even managed to tell about, took an active part in defense of the rights of oppressed people in other countries, not in socialist ones. This is that it was simply impossible for the Soviet person to understand. How? So he escaped from here, he must save me, I am so enslaved, and instead he goes to protect the rights of black or red -skinned. So the dissident movement, the movement of human rights defenders was much wider. And an example of any movement that similar in organizing the Jewish movement, say, the Crimean Tatar movement, of course, also concerned, first of all, the Crimean Tatars, just like a Jewish movement, and this is natural, this is not a minus, it concerned, first of all, the rights of the Jewish population. And when I said that about the same ratio, the Documents of Samizdat reached the general legal protection or Jewish, yes, of course, this is also because some specific documents that went to the samizdat - Hebrew textbooks, books on the history of Israel - they just did not reach me, because, perhaps, I did not pay attention to them, I stopped showing them, I stopped showing them, Since there was too much boiling and living around.
And now, what is interesting.
No more and no less.
(Song)
Here's what he said:
Alexander Galich:
Your will!
There is no more strength or meaning
Cursed lady peak!
Fly to the wrong truth
Only the piercing smell of Gary
Is there a more land land,
On the rosatyech of the squares,
And frosts ring over them
Your last singer of the outcome
Leave! And I will stay.
