All names are changed.
I have long wanted to rewrite my essay on fortunetellers, written two years ago, but I lacked the material. And suddenly life itself began to return me to this plot. First, I visited a group seminar in psychology, where the phenomenon of the prediction of the future was discussed: the psychotherapist explained how in the question you can independently find an answer and even foresee the development of an exciting situation. All this topic was interesting to me, first of all, as a journalist and editor-the seminar discussed the construction of proposals and words-markers a lot. In fact, the whole topic came down to how to formulate questions and ask them to yourself and others. But suddenly the speech suddenly came to fortunetellers. The host of the seminar asked the audience to highlight the general features of mediums. And since I had good experience with such people, I actively joined the conversation.
At the time of the seminar, I knew only two fortunetellers - Katerina, who lived in my hometown, in a place called "behind the line", and Nina from the village near Moscow.
“Yes, yes, these people, as a rule, live separately, on the outskirts,” the psychologist of the seminar picked up my thought.
I also determined that the “real” fortunetellers never set the price for their services and always say: “how much will you give.” In addition, “good” fortunetellers never engage in evil eyes, damage and other dark magic. So Katerina and Nina explained to me. Each has a working tool: Katerina used beads from green pebbles, asked for the date of birth and calculated something according to numbers and planets. Nina wondered on greasy cards. Both fortunetellers offer a variety of rituals and sacraments to attract good luck or favorable resolution of the situation: Katya gave multi -colored conspiracy papers (red - for love, green - for money, blue - I don’t remember what), Nina - pins from evil people who had to be pinned for lining clothes, and magical clove “from conflicts”.
Finally, each had a recipe for relief of mental pain and suffering-Katya reported a prayer in her own language and said that after this procedure it should certainly become easier, and Nina offered a traditional therapeutic technique: within a week, to write for seventy times on paper “I forgive everything and with love I release such and such”. Both, according to those clients who agreed with me, helped. It is difficult for me to say whether I had at least one ritual, but perhaps my witchcraft achievements were not so obvious because they were made of great curiosity, not faith.
A couple of weeks after the seminar, one of my friends suddenly asked for a meeting with Nina, and again I had the pleasure of observing her amazing abilities. And soon after that I went to my hometown to visit my parents. And here the puzzle completely developed.
Large snow was falling, the air was frosty and prickly, and in this cold and in the measured snow movement there was something magical-as if someone had provided the plot in which we found ourselves corresponding to the decoration.
- Do you want me to take you to a new sorcerer? - Mom suggested suddenly. - You all wanted to add the story, said, I needed a third witch. So you will be the third witch.
- And what kind of woman? And how did you know about her?
- Yes, my cosmetologist told me. She probably knows this aunt - Anna - for twenty years. He says that she has a gift - he sees through the water.
- How is it - through water?
- Yes, so I know. But without water, they say, he does not tell.
“So what is she doing?” Predicts?
- predicts. And heals. And I don't know. Let's go?
I agreed.
Mom ordered a taxi: Anna lived in a deaf Kaluga village, where public transport did not go. On the way, we bought two huge Zhban with water.
I immediately liked everything on this trip: I was falling large snow, the air was frosty and prickly, and in this cold, in the purity surrounding us, so soft and white, and in the measured snow movement there was something magical-as if someone had provided the plot in which we found ourselves corresponding to the decoration.
Our driver looked like a pirate-a dark-skinned man with a dashing arrogant smile and a large earring in his ear-and for some reason caused great sympathy and trust. My mother, as soon as we sat down, so immediately told him:
- Let's go to the witch in the village.
“Wow,” he whistled. - And what kind of sorceress? So maybe I'm going to her? And then a mortgage and two divorces. I lost my job. Do you think the sorceress will help?
“Let us find out,” Mom answered. - We still have partly research interest.
From this moment, we rode like three conspirators.
Ivan - that was the name of our driver - turned out to be very talkative. We quickly learned that he himself originally from the local village lives in the house almost in the forest. He worked at the metallurgical plant, but was fired from the reduction production. From the first marriage it has an eleven -year -old daughter. Pays alimony regularly. He loves winter fishing.
“I generally believe that there are witches and that their conspiracies work,” he suddenly returned to the topic of our journey. -My mother went to some sorceress when I was in the army. They spoke something there, and the sorceress said that in a month I would be at home, I would return ahead of schedule. And what do you think? I fell with pneumonia, and during the examination it suddenly became clear that I still had some kind of heartfelt vice or something, in short, something there with the valve of this heart, interruptions in the rhythm, I still did not understand. Well, they returned me home. So now I think: she just saw it that my heart was wrong with my heart, or are they, two fools, they cursed me with an opportunity?
-Did you go to the doctor then? I asked.
-Nope. For what? I'm fine. Doctors with us - you know. Worse than witches. It’s better to go to the grandmothers than to doctors. But I am now afraid of witches slightly. Who knows them there. Are you not afraid?
- Not really. My daughter had just a very favorable experience in such a contact, ”my mother answered gently. - We had one fortuneteller in our city. Her name was Katerina. The girl was beautiful. Smart, very pleasant. Her husband was stabbed out of jealousy.
- How did you steal? - I stared. - How did my husband kill? You said, she had a heart. She died from the heart.
- Oh, Olya.
So it turned out that the death of Katerina was not such a mysterious, mystical incident, as it always seemed to me. Poor Katerina was killed, and this thought is still bothering me. Because although I chuckled at “all this fool” and told everyone that I was interested only in sorceresses out of creative interest, I believed in Katina’s ability. But if she really could look beyond the line, then how could she not “saw” her death?
The place “behind the line”, where Katerina lived, was formally located within the city, but was cut off from the rest of the areas by railway tracks, a station and a market. It was possible to get there only by taxi or on foot from the station. The houses there were mostly wooden, which greatly distinguished this area from the young science city, which is still actively built up with high -rise buildings. The names of the streets caused me special delight: “Behind the line” were the streets of Tchaikovsky, Leo Tolstoy and Mayakovsky. In the city itself, there was nothing like this: my parents and I lived on Gagarin Street, daily moved along Kurchatov Street, Marx and Lenin Avenues. A little more lucky grandmother - she lived on Gorky Street.
Katya lived in a one -story house painted with blue paint. A rusty gate, a oblique rotten porch. Behind the wool door is a warm, breathed dressing room. Two shops, a dirty mirror, yellow wallpaper in a flower, a white crazy cat. Katina is a relative and assistant Zulfiya - a fat woman in a scarf, from whom a dark hooked nose stuck - baked bread and sold it right away: visitors willingly squeezed hot lavashi. It happened that they treated it out of time. Zulfiya followed order in line and called people on the list.
They said in line that Katya and her family came from Tajikistan. “Behind the line” they lived for a long time, about the fortuneteller of Katya and her mother, the healer of Sonya, knew not only in the city, but also beyond its borders - there were always expensive Moscow foreign cars near the gate.
For the first time, I first got with Aunt Tanya, my mother’s friend. I then had a difficult period. I studied in high school, prepared for admission to Moscow and was very worried. Parents wanted me to enter the economy, and I myself could not make a decision than I want to do. Because of this, I endlessly painted pictures of the apocalyptic future: here I am standing in a cashier in my father’s shop, but I am my floors. Or I work as a confectioner at a candy factory. I remove garbage on the territory of the Physics and Energy Institute. My classmates in laboratory robes go past and laugh in a demonic way.
“I can't,” my mother barked after my next hysteria. “I don't know how to reassure you!” Well, do you want to send you to the fortuneteller? So let her tell you exactly where to go.
- Lord, mothers, what are you carrying at all? - I soared. - What a fortuneteller? Come on the tasks on the coffee grounds to solve it! With the exam, am I also a fortuneteller to call the toilet?
- Well, go at least get fun, I don't know. You won’t believe it, so at least laugh. Let me call Aunt Tanya, she will take you with her.
- And why does Aunt Tanya go to a fortuneteller? - I was surprised.
- Aunt Tanya has three lovers.
- How did you steal? - I stared. - How did my husband kill? You said, she had a heart. She died from the heart. - Oh, Olya.
This message struck me so that not only Aunt Tanya, but also, it seems, our whole city suddenly appeared in front of me in a completely different light. Not any actress. Not in the cinema and not in the book. In our city, the accountant of Aunt Tanya has three lovers.
“Well, wow,” I could only say. - And why should a fortuneteller?
“How do I know,” the mother answered. - Probably, with three men without a witch not to be sought. And they still have wives.
- Fuck. And there are wives! Oh, I really want Aunt Tanya!
Tanya Tanya, probably, was not very pleasant to the journey - I stared at her all the way and really wanted to ask where she got three lovers from, and how they would make lovers at all, and why did she have so many, and what these wives think there, and much more. But Aunt Tanya-a dry, stinging blonde with sharp nails-so glanced at me from under densely painted eyelashes that I did not dare to make a sound. But she looked with great admiration.
Already “behind the line” I timidly asked what this fortuneteller was doing.
- Katya - sees. And her mother and brother are being treated.
- How to treat? I asked.
“Well, somehow treated,” answered Aunt Tanya. -Maybe they inspire something. I don't know. I myself only go to Katya. She guesses the hand, puts her beads, calculates something. But it predicts very accurately. I have never been mistaken yet.
Here, of course, I really wanted to ask what exactly the fortuneteller Katya was not mistaken in, but Aunt Tanya's gaze told me: “Don't even think.”
The audience in the dressing room was very motley, like in line for the doctor: there were sole ladies with expensive bags, and young giggling girls, and heavy men with barriers, and inconspicuous managers in costumes, and old women with adhesions, and habalistic aunts with store bags - they all sat on the side, silent and gloomy. Sometimes they were quietly talking in a whisper, because there was always a person who came for the first time. And the same question always sounded:
- Did you help you? Does the truth work?
On that first visit, they brought the girl in a wheelchair with a wheelchair, she was drove her into the house somewhere, and she went out on her feet-unsteady, resting on her mother’s hand.
- Wow! - I admired.
The old woman, sitting nearby, leaned toward me:
- This is not the first time to bring. Always like this - he arrives in a stroller, she comes out.
When my turn came, I threw off my shoes and outer clothing and went through the dark door. There was a room, all completely hung with carpets. From furniture - two couchs, between them an oilcloth table and a stool.
Katya was sitting on one of the boots - a very beautiful dark -skinned woman of about thirty -five. In a warm colorful dress and a scarf. Her legs - very small - were shod in soft blue slippers.
I sat on a chair. She took my hand, looked, shook her head and said:
- Come when there will be twenty. Now there is nothing to say about you.
I was upset.
- How nothing? Well, at least I will take it to the institute?
“You’ll do it,” Katya answered, not looking at me.
- And in which?
She reluctantly took my palm again, put the rosary from the green beads to her and began to calculate something, muttering the numbers and the names of the planets.
“You will write,” she said finally. - That's it, go.
I had a thousand rubles with me, but Katya did not take money from me.
And although I came out disappointed, it seemed a little lighter inside. Even now I can remember the warmth of Katya’s hand - as if she held my hand with tenderness and love. With a kindness unlimited to me, which at the same time seemed to not belong to her, but simply was in her, looked her eyes, touched her with her hands.
I soon forgot about that conversation. And she remembered only a few years later, when she came to Katya again - already a student of the journalism department.
Then I could not find a job and was terribly harassed. Mother again sent me with Aunt Tanya, who at that time remained only one lover.
There were few people in the dressing room, and I talked with one woman who also came from Moscow. A pleasant blonde in an expensive coat said that her husband, an entrepreneur, was in prison with a charge under the 159th article-fraud.
- And what do you think Katya will help you?
- Don't know. And what, we wear money for cops, why not wear a fortuneteller? And where else to find this horror to find this horror.
When I entered her room, Katya immediately recognized me.
- Well, are you writing?
- I am writing.
- And you will also write. Such is your life.
- Yes, I can’t find a job.
Katya looked at my hands, turned the green beads.
- When would you like to go to work?
- Well ... after the New Year.
- What salary do you want?
-Yes, at least some. I am still sitting an interns.
- What else do you want?
- And also ... And I also want a person who would take up for me, who would teach me to suddenly be found. From the interns, everyone waves them away, fill up with some kind of nonsense, nonsense. And I really want to work, really.
Katya nodded. I looked at my palms again, counted something.
- You will have a job as you want. After two weeks.
- What should be done?
- Nothing needs to be done. He will come.
I put a thousand rubles on the table, Katya nodded.
“And here,” she added suddenly. -Someday, in a few years, you will work in a pink building. There will be a restaurant and a hotel nearby.
I came out of her very pleased, and inside it was again a bright, pleasant feeling - a strange joy that came from nowhere.
Two weeks later, in my life, a person really appeared who invited me to work and became my first mentor. From that moment on, I, unable to believe in myself, believed in Katya. And although I have been with her since then only once, the very thought that somewhere there is a blue house in which Katya lives, reassured me at difficult moments. I believed that Katerina’s prediction was a kind of miracle, and felt that miracles could not be abused. The last time I came to her when I was terribly bad after a heavy parting. At that time, Katya did not predict anything - she put her hand to my chest and sang in an incomprehensible language.
“It will now be easier for you, and someday it will pass at all,” she said, finishing. “But now it will become easier for you.”
And it really became easier for me. Maybe only because I just believed her.
The fact that Katya died, I learned from my mother. It was after I graduated from the university. By that time, I worked in a pink building. Nearby were the restaurant "Pushkin" and the Hotel "East-West".
“And now attention,” the driver Ivan informed us. - On the right in the course there will be an amazing phenomenon. Anomaly. Very strange clearing.
I clung to the window, Ivan slowed down. Before us, a strange sight appeared in front of us: a wide strip suddenly arose in the middle of the forest, where fragments of trunks stuck out of snow. The crowns of the trees were lying right there - as if an angry giant had passed through the forest.
“Maybe a hurricane,” Mom suggested.
“It doesn't look like,” Ivan answered. -Eh, but something happened here, huh? Something extraordinary? And you could be here at that moment? Well, that is, I, of course, was no longer, but I could theoretically? That is, I am about: how many amazing events could theoretically happen to us. And they can still happen. But what far to go. I walked with the dog yesterday in the forest, and there in. Look.
He handed his phone to his mother. In the photo from deep snow, a green, scalp fern stuck out.
In the editorial office, it turned out that death abroad was predicted to almost everyone. We laughed for a long time - who knows where the borders of Russia will be, when it is time to die?
- How did he get out? - Mom was surprised.
“These, I think, miracles,” Ivan answered. - There are a lot of miracles in general. They, like this fern, literally stick out. But I went into the forest and saw. And so no one goes to the forest. Miracles - they are always where laziness is going. Well, or scary.
“There are miracles in the church too,” said Mom.
- So to the church too - and scary and laziness.
- Why is it scary?
- Yes, by God, after all, they only scare. That's scary. Who would say that God is good.
“Good God,” I said.
- How do you know?
- I don't know. I believe so.
- But to fortunetellers, they say, a sin to walk.
“Yes, probably sin,” I agreed.
- And what?
- Don't know.
I was bored. Hallucination. Demon.
- Nothing.
I asked.
Blues. Differently.
So here.
- Not really.
- Right.
I nodded.
Don't say.
- Well?
It was dark.
