1837 Duel of Pushkin and Dantes

180 years ago, on February 8, 1837, a duel took place between the poet Alexander Pushkin and the lieutenant of the cavalry regiment Georges de Gekkern (Dantes). It took place on the outskirts of St. Petersburg near the Black River. They fired with pistols. Pushkin was seriously wounded in the stomach. On February 10, he died. Dantes, slightly wounded in the arm by Pushkin's return shot, was, by decision of Emperor Nicholas I, who commuted the sentence of a military court, stripped of his officer rank and sent abroad.
