CNN: US senators want to prohibit the lifting of sanctions against the Russian Federation, bypassing Congress

A number of US senators are planning to submit a bill for consideration by their colleagues, according to which, in order to lift sanctions against Russia, US President Donald Trump will need to obtain permission from Congress, CNN reports.

In addition, the document provides for a 120-day period for Congress to consider easing sanctions.

Senators Lindsey Graham (Republican) and Ben Cardin (Democrat) were the authors of the document, according to a CNN report.

For his part, Republican Senator Marco Rubio said that many senators support the bill.

“I think if there was a real threat of lifting sanctions in the absence of respect for the sovereignty of Ukraine and compliance with the terms of the agreements, we would have enough votes to approve this bill in the Senate and get such a majority that would deprive the president of the opportunity to veto,” TV channel quotes the words of the senator.
