Our magazine has many parents. In the genesis - even Comrade. Stalin, by whose order in June 1943, the forefather began to be released under the logo “War and the working class”, and since 1945 the magazine received the name “New Time” and soon began to be published in eight languages. The magazine was part of the structure called APN - the News Agency, which, if the news produced, then in the form of active events served the “roof” of the KGB of the USSR.
When the Soviet government ended, and with it the Synekura of State Propaganda, the New Time magazine went into free swimming - became a platform for democratic publicists - such as the great Lera Novodvorskaya, who was a regular columnist and in the new incarnation of the magazine - The New Times / New Time - from the first issue to his death in July 2014. In the old “New Time”, Tsukanova’s love also worked - she still works, although remotely.
By the fall of 2006, the magazine was already almost bankrupt. On October 7, Anna Politkovskaya was killed - in fact, Anya, with her death, gave her life to a new magazine: the founders of Ren TV, mother and son, Irena and Dmitry Lesnevsky, bought the New Time brand: “We all need an oxygen pillow,” Lesnevskaya said at the funeral of Politkovskaya.
The restart, and, in fact, the startup of the new publication - with a new logo (then the logos in English came into fashion), Raf Shakirov made a new layout, a new model of journalists - a former editor -in -chief of Kommersant and Izvestia - he left six months later.
The first number of the new edition was released with agent 007 on the cover and removal of the main topic: "Who and why killed Litvinenko." A month and a half after the release of the sixth issue, in which it was about the Kremlin’s military detachments, which AP created to fight the orange threat on the streets of Moscow, Lesnevskaya called from the Kremlin: they say she sent a famous address of three letters at a famous address. They never called anymore.
Then there was an investigation to wash money through dozens of leading Russian and Austrian banks - the business of the “financiers” in uniform, the “Black Cash desk of the Kremlin”, the deportation of the best investigator of the journal Natalia Morar from Russia - we managed to return it to Moscow in 4 years and 3 months, after the personal intervention of the then President Dmitry Medvedev, for which I will always be grateful to him; There were slaves of riot police and “Mikhail Ivanovich”, “their house - Russia” about the clans that control the Russian Federation CJSC, and “all the best are children” about their grown kids. There were searches, courts, surveillance, an explosive device under the gas tank of the engine of the editor -in -chief, there were warnings of Roskomnadzor - there were and are, to live in Russia, and even more so to work as journalists in an independent, not a supercan meal - it is not boring.
Independent media is the norm, and in our conditions - and an antithesis of fear. Because The New Times comes to you every week
All these 10 years we were endlessly closed: first every month, then every six months, then every New Year - one time to predict when The New Times closes was a specialization of the now well -known columnist and a regime fighter. We survived the “fucking chain”, the closure of competitors from wealthy publishing houses, parting with our publisher Irena Lesnevskaya, who has always been owed to her for six years - invested money in a deliberately unprofitable publication. Advertising ran from the magazine after the story of Natasha Morar and never really returned: “To give you advertising means to sponsor the opposition to Putin,” - this phrase was repeated and continued to repeat advertising agencies and owners of not the latest Russian and foreign companies. At the same time, according to the Office of the President of the Russian Federation, the presidential administration writes out 15 copies of the magazine, two - the office of the president, the government - 13 copies, and our best sales - before we were forced to leave retail, were always on Rublevka.
All these 10 years we were constantly told that we were behind the mysterious someone-they called the author about the “Chekist hook” of Viktor Cherkesov, then Dmitry Medvedev, then the American State Department and the British Foreign Office ... It’s simpler: never a single state or affiliated with the state, relatives or alien, the structure has not translated us a ruble and a cent They took it. After parting with our publisher, many people came to the rescue, and above all Dmitry and Boris Zimina - we would not have survived without them. Hundreds of people transfer money to us - from 2 thousand to half a million. Sometimes we know their names-for example, this year the famous TV presenter, who once wrote for us, became a sponsor of the magazine under the pseudonym Voltaire, Vladimir Pozner, and sometimes we cannot find out: “I am just fulfilling the order,” says a person who has carried out an extremely serious translation. We are grateful to everyone. And our subscribers first of all - without you we would have never been to us for a long time.
“This magazine is prohibited by the government”-either by their own initiative they lie, or at the direction of the kioskers in St. Petersburg, and not in one kiosk, and not two, readers inform us. “Do not leave the concierge-I don’t want someone to know that I am writing The New Times,” the obviously non-poor subscriber asks. “So the FSB calculates opponents of the regime,” the third informs us.
Fear is the main trouble and the main problem of Russian society, fear has always been and remains the main weapon of our repressive system. Independent media is the norm, and in our conditions - and an antithesis of fear. Therefore, The New Times comes to you every week. And he will come.
