Report on the actions of Russia during the siege of Aleppo. Main

The Atlantic Council - an influential American non -governmental analytical center - published a report “Breaking Aleppo”, dedicated primarily to Russia's actions in Syria. In the document on 70 pages, according to its authors, "the fall of Aleppo is shown in details." One of the main authors of the report is the Atlantic Council Eliot Higgins, the head of the Bellingcat group of investigators.

Unguided bombs

In the introductory part, the authors recall that Russia began a military campaign in Syria in September 2015, "marking this beginning of the most cruel period of a six -year conflict."

The main part of the report is opened by a story about the assault on Aleppo, which began in the summer of 2016, and the victims among civilians of the city. According to the Atlantic Council, the assault on Aleppo "brought horrors of the 20th century to the twenty -first."

The battle for Aleppo began back in 2012, and even then the city was bombarded. “Significant strengthening” of air shelling was recorded in 2013, as well as in September 2015 and in the last months of 2016. The authors of the report note an increase in the variety of weapons, which was used for bombing.

According to Syrian Network for Human Rights, which is referred to by the Atlantic Council, in 2016, more than four thousand barrel bombs (Barrel Bomb) were dropped in 2016-artisanal explosive devices that pose the greatest danger to the civilian population due to non-controlled and low accuracy. The analysis of the satellite shots that Human Rights Watch conducted, made it possible to establish that in the eastern part of Aleppo there was an average of more than one explosion per hour. In total, 506 civilians of the city died from barrels.

Having studied the satellite pictures of Aleppo from 2010 to 2016, the UN specialists found out that by September 2016, more than 33.5 thousand objects were destroyed in the city. Mostly, it is noted in the report, these objects were located in the areas of East Aleppo and in the suburbs occupied by the opposition.

“Each indignant attack is worthy of the investigation,” the authors of the report say. “But for brevity, we devoted the following chapters to the shelling of hospitals and medical facilities, chemical weapons and cassette bombs.”
