On the small streets of the town of Paterson, New Jersey, bypassing the corners too close to each other's houses, a large bus crawls. His driver is also the name of Paterson, which will certainly surprise his every new friend. And he is a poet - and this is completely not surprising. Who else can you be in the small homeland of Allen Ginzberg and less known to the Russian -speaking reader, but no less important William Carlos Williams?
Through mediation, criticism is difficult to consider the last films of Jarmusha - in this I will have to sign in advance. All usually tangible production details in them remain in the background, although you can talk about wonderful music, and about beautiful subtle actors, and about the extremely balanced scenario - but this is unlikely to understand what the magic of “controls”, “lovers” or, in fact, “Paterson” is. Jarmush manages to create a versatile fabric of life, in one case - eternal and otherworldly, and in the other - everyday and seemingly understandable, but there is a place for magic every minute. But still, let's try to look closer.
The usual Monday, following which will follow the usual Tuesday and the usual environment - and so on until the new Monday. Nothing will happen this week, not counting one tragedy, and that will go unnoticed: the world will not collapse, no one will be punished - just a viscous life will continue to go. Paterson goes (more precisely, of course, goes to work every day, at home a funny wife Laura is waiting for him, who wants to become a country singer (more precisely, for a start, to start buying the same guitar and come up with a suit, and there it turns out) and Bulldog Marvin, who does not want anything, not considering the satisfaction of normal dog needs. After work or in breaks, Paterson goes to the same places and meets different people - rapper from the laundry, “real poet” in the person of a little girl, a in love actor on the verge of suicide and many others. Each has its own story, which will necessarily impress the poet and remain in his memory. In such a magic of everyday life, the main lesson that can be gleaned from this film, even if you discard all its sparkling multi -layered: beauty can be found around every angle and in any glance caught along the way to work and melt it in another beauty. This is how the perfect world sounds, where everyone is sensitive to the environment and others.
Here, as in the previous film, the choice of place is not accidental: “Paterson” is the main and huge poem of William Carlos Williams, an interesting American poet who made everyday life poetic material. "Paterson" Jarmusha, in fact, is the transfer of this poem into the language of the movie:
"A man like a city and a woman line a
- Who are in love. Two Women. Three Women.
Innumerable Women, Each Like a Flower.
But
Only One Man - Like a City. "
The new film Jarmusha is a movie about poetry. In general, a movie about cinema, a movie about art, a movie about the nature of artistic - this is a whole separate genre, in which directors, as a rule, are expressed in an extremely personal way. Jim Jarmush, it seems, does not hide that the main character is partly himself: the director even put his own poem into Paterson's mouth, not counting that he gave him his interests and, of course, his view of the world. And he is really unique. After watching Paterson, at least, he is very drawn to recall his random cousin, Cohen Lewen Davis, whose sagaulous talent was buried under the same routine in which Jarmush finds happiness and beauty. However, for Paterson and his director there is no problem with glory and recognition - these are really not those things that can become a problem for real art, self -sufficient and capable of existing during minimal publicity. After all, this is not a profession, and not even a vocation or work of life, this is primarily a way of life. The driver Paterson simply cannot choose another way, and for the same reason he sincerely does not understand when Laura’s wife begs him to make copies of his poems: why, if they are already, are written, live in it and in it? Everything else is already superfluous.
The Torah teaches to perceive life as a miracle in every moment, which is very alien to European culture with its eternal complication; Therefore, Paterson seems so simple and frivolous. The artist is supposed to suffer, and philosophy is full of insoluble conflicts-maybe this is all extremely fair, but still points of view. There are others - for example, the one that Jarmush highlights through Paterson. Shortly before this film, he shot “Gimme Danger” - an extremely charming picture about IGGI POP and his “The Stooges”, in which he focused on the details of the character of an outstanding musician and his special relationship with the world. Through this puzzle, the whole great legacy of the group was perfectly visible: instead of historical pathos, special feelings, instead of a story about a departed era - the affirmation of endless vitality. Jim Jarmush seems to really know how to love and rejoice, and the value of everything that he does on the screen. He really falls in love with the viewer that he is dear to himself.
The idyllic world of Paterson, of course, is involved on a very real basis, and yet-this is the fantasy of Jim Jarmusha. Crazy reports from the elections and news about ISIS do not reach a tiny outback: the director, in principle, is not used to taking into account what he himself is frankly uninteresting, and the worlds of his films are always a drilled past of America. A person always remains a man, and it is important for the director to pay attention to a constant, and not temporary: in a changing world, we continue to love and dream the same as thousands of years ago. Not escapism, but internal logic, which is difficult to catch if you try to think about it, and which does not cause any doubt during viewing - this is the power of belief with this artist. The town of Paterson and its inhabitants exist, of course, according to the laws of poetry. Laura also writes his own poem, filling the interior of their common with the Paterson of the house with black and white rugs, pillows and curtains, the same rhyme withstands the Bulldog Marvin, waiting for the owner every evening to take his chair. All characters, both the main and the second -aligned, have their own rhythm, in the harmony with which they live. The threats of a lover will not end with real suicide, and Laura is unlikely to become a country-singer, a joke about Carlos William Carlos will remain funny forever-everyone lives in an eternal return, which the director does not see anything bad or boring. However, even if some event happens, then in Paterson it does not stand out from a number of others. When we are talking about a life similar to a movie, we usually mean adventures and dramatic turns, which in real life is acutely lacking. And this cinema really looks like a life in which nothing significant or irreparable happens, and at the same time every step and turn is important and significant, because there will never be the same thing.

If you are not interested in either American poetry or the work of a specific director, you should still touch the Paterson, since he is not deprived of more tangible virtues.
The first and most importantly, of course, Adam Driver, from the star of the shallow series "Girls" grew up in one of the most interesting young actors in the United States. Probably, another performer for such a character as Paterson is difficult to imagine. The driver will not act, but nevertheless fills with meaning every effect and word, until the end of the film remains invariably closed and slightly phlegmatic, but does something, which is why the main character on the first Monday seems to be the best friend, whom you know, like a peeling. He is perfectly balanced by the Pharakhani golshift, for which Paterson became an excellent opportunity to discard the role of a languid beauty: it turns out that all this time a great comedy actress was hiding, playing almost half -sulfur muse without hesitation. However, there are many surprises in the background: for a few minutes, a duet of matured children from the “Kingdom of the Complete Moon” appears for a few minutes, and Method Man, the next participant in Wu-Tang Clan. IGGI POP will also appear in Paterson in the form of a newspaper clipping: Jarmush is consistent with the construction of his own universe.
This is a self-portrait (that the long-standing lovers of Jarmusha will read without difficulty), but, of course, the portrait of America that the director sees it: not the main world supplier of fast food culture, but a country with a very distinctive literary tradition; Not a cradle of poster democracy, but a place where people of various origin and traditions can find a real house. Being an hour and a half in this America, you see it from such a viewing angle that you have no chance not to fall in love. In waterfalls, poems without rhyme, a clumsy bus and an unscrupulous dog. And in the feeling that each of us is a poet, you only need to carefully look around.
