“Then he was blinding again and felt that he was being held and picked up the stairs. And there was such a conversation at the top:“ Keep, ”said the invisible man.“ We are led, ”the invisible people answered.“ Here, ”said the invisible people.“ I understand, ”the invisible person asked?“ He answered, ”he answered,” Palenka said, and Palenka said. He said in a very thin voice: “I sang.”
This is a fragment of one of the "Harmsian" stories of the writer and art critic Vsevolod Petrov, who in the late 30s in Daniil Harms. By that time, Harms, who had already experienced arrest and expulsion, together with other members of the Literary Association of Oberiu on charges of participating in the "anti -Soviet group of writers", was practically deprived of the opportunity to earn money with writing. Petrov described the then attitude of Harms: "He thought about the war with horror and despair and knew in advance that she would bring him death; he really did not survive the war, although death came to him, perhaps not in the way he was afraid then." Harms was arrested on August 23, 1941 on charges of spreading slanderous and amazing sentiments. He was attributed to him such words: "I will not put the form and I will not serve in the Soviet troops, I do not want to be such a shit. If I were forced to shoot from a machine gun from the attics during street battles with the Germans, then I will shoot not at the Germans, but at them from the same machine gun." Harms simulated madness to avoid execution, was placed in a psychiatric hospital and died in a prison hospital on February 2, 1942 - in one of the most hungry months of the blockade of Leningrad. It is assumed that he is buried in a mass grave in the Piskarevsky cemetery.
75 years later, in early February 2017, Harms was remembered in blogs, publications, social networks, placing his latter, from the investigation, photographs and quotes from works.
Harms was rehabilitated and became popular - primarily as the author of ridiculous absurd, abstract texts and excellent children's poetry. Its rejection of Soviet power and a nonpatriotic attitude to war are hardly equally known (and the latter could be considered reprehensible and even blasphemous and from the point of view of today's “patriotic” rhetoric in Russia, despite all the horrors that fell to the share of Harms in the Stalin Soviet Union).
Many of his biographers consider the scammer to be the screening of the quoted statements of Harms from the case: "I will shoot not at the Germans, but in them from the same machine gun." The dispute about whether it was possible to trust the testimonies of the scammers three years ago between the historian of literature Valery Shubinsky and literary critic Gleb Morev.
Shubinsky rejected the version of the "Permanian sympathies and conscious amazing" Daniil Harms and Alexander Vvedensky. Morev considered the writers to represent writers with the limp victims of repressions: "Both died, among people whose wine, from the point of view of the Soviet regime, was that in the conditions of the war with the Germans they, to say, carefully, on the one hand, did not express the support of the Soviet regime and its Red Army and on the other - did not show hatred for the enemy."
Here are some evidence of Harms's attitude to the war cited in this polemic - a scammer, and friends and acquaintances of Harms:
From the case of the NKVD (based on the readings of the scammer):
"Yuvachev-Harms declares:
- The Soviet Union lost the war on the first day. Leningrad will now either be besieged or die a starvation or bomb, without leaving a stone on a stone. Then the Baltic Fleet will also surrender, and Moscow will already be surrendered after that without a fight.
Yuvachev-Harms hates the Soviet government and is looking forward to the change of owls. Government, saying:
“It is more pleasant for me to be in the Germans in concentration camps than to live under the Soviet regime.”
Vsevolod Petrov:
Harms in the fall of 1939: "In my opinion, there are only two ways left. <...> either there will be a war, or we will all die from the Parsha." - Why? I asked in bewilderment. “Well, from our dull and hopeless life we will breathe, we will cover the corona or steam and die from this,” answered Daniil Ivanovich.
Nina Gernet:
Harms in the spring of 1941: "There will be a war. Leningrad is waiting for the fate of Coventry."
Pavel Zaltsman.
Harms in the summer of 1941: "We will crawl without legs, holding on to the burning walls."
Today - especially in the light of the last survey of public opinion, according to which almost half of Russians sympathizes with Stalin - Radio Liberty decided to return to the discussion of the tragic fate of Harms and its perception in modern Russia. We asked to express our views of the author of the biography of Harms Alexander Kobrinsky and Gleb Morev.
Alexander Kobrinsky:
- As a person studying the work of Harms, his biography is almost 30 years old, I can say that this denunciation was absolutely slanderous, false. Everyone who knew Harms at least a little understand how false the words that he will shoot at someone. Harms, rifle, shooting, army - incompatible things. There is a wonderful entry in his notebook: "If the state is likened to the human body, then in case of war I would like to live in the heel." Harms thought how to be away from this war at all at all. His friends recalled that he was very gloomy after the outbreak of war, he had very difficult prophecies. He said that Leningrad was waiting for the fate of Coventry - an English city, which was demolished by German aviation from the face of the earth. He was very afraid. As soon as the Finnish war began, Harms went to a psychiatric dispensary and, with the help of his brilliant artistic abilities, received a certificate that he was mentally ill. This certificate helped him after the arrest, thanks to her he was not shot immediately, but sent him for forced treatment, however, this prolonged his life for only a few months. Therefore, the conversations that he will shoot at someone, to kill is entirely fictitious by the scammer, absolutely for sure. As for hatred ( to the Soviet regime, which the scammer is talking about. - Approx. ) - it is difficult to imagine what information was about Nazism then for people. Information was, but kutsai and filtered. The whole truth about Nazi concentration camps did not know in the Soviet Union. Harms could not say such words [about concentration camps]. And about the fact that he did not like the Bolsheviks - of course, he did not like the Bolsheviks. He did not love Soviet power, but he was never an anti -Soviet, that is, he was never going to fight them. The only thing he could be to try to stay aside, so that it hurts him the least.
- There were two tyrannical regimes, in Germany and in the Soviet Union, Harms was between them. And the words that he said to Petrov: “either war or death from the Parsha” is a foreboding that either from one or on the other side will be destroyed. Is this actually a comparison of the same evil forces?
- Do not impose our ideas about history. We know what these two modes were. There is no evidence, as Harms perceived Nazi Germany, not a single one at all. He was originally Germanophile, but this, of course, referred to the traditional German culture, to the German language, Goethe, Heine and other figures of German culture. Not a single statement about how Harms perceived his modern Hitler Germany. Building these guesses, in my opinion, is completely pointless. Then there were people, entire countries that stood before this tragic choice-between Hitler and Stalin-who had some hopes for the overthrow of Bolshevism hated by Hitler. In my opinion, it was a tragic mistake, and for some, criminal activity. Because, in my opinion, Hitler Germany was that level of horror and nightmare, to which Stalin did not have time to reach, but of course went. Thank God, he died in time and did not manage to realize some of Hitler's achievements. The idea that with the help of one evil you can defeat another evil, very heavy, unpleasant. But Harms was not a historiosoph, a historian who could judge from the height of our knowledge. He simply lived in the country, in the city where his friends, beloved people were, and there were representatives of the regime, from which, I repeat, he tried to hide in every way. It still seems to me that he in no case perceived the Germans as some liberators, although we had such people. I think he had a sober idea that fighting the Communists with the help of the Nazis is absurd and schizophrenic. He was afraid of bombing and shelling - yes. He saw that war could lead to the fact that everyone would die. When he, his wife tried to carry his wife on the construction of fortifications, is what a war was for him. And about the fact that with the help of Hitler you can defeat Stalin, there is no such thing anywhere, all these conversations are just an attempt to broadcast our modern consciousness and our modern problems at that time. For the inhabitants of the Baltic states, this was relevant, for the inhabitants of Western Belarus and Ukraine it was relevant, for many inhabitants of Europe it was more than relevant, but for Harms living in the then Leningrad, no.
“You say that he just tried to hide somewhere away.” By the beginning of the war, he had already survived the persecution, he was in poverty, could he relate to the Soviet regime as it is just something, what could he hide from?
- Of course, he had a negative attitude towards Soviet power and the Bolsheviks, but no one was arguing - he wrote about it, even wrote in his diaries, notebooks - casually, it was dangerous. But from this he did not conclude that with the Bolsheviks it was necessary to fight immediately - this was completely not in his character. Yes, indeed, in 1937 they stopped printing it, then, however, after a while they became again. He did not look for work, he did not imagine any other work other than literary. Then they still began to print him. They lived, of course, very difficult, sometimes starving. After the outbreak of war, Harms constantly waited for arrest - this is also known. He even carried with him a large number of things in case he was arrested somewhere on the street. But again, he never tried to fight the Soviet government. He did not know how, did not know, it was not his business absolutely. How will you fight with this machine? The only way was to try to somehow adapt, but, again, how would you adapt? In the memoirs of Marina Malich, his second wife, we read that he actually reconciled with the upcoming arrest, waited, as Mandelstam said, the "guests of the dear" constantly.
“ It seems to me that I hear the sounds of air anxiety, ” said Zvonarev.“ You hear a lot there with dull ears, ” answered Olga Trofimovna.“ Yes, more than you, ” said Zvonarev.“ No, less, ” answered Olga Trofimovna.“ I really hear the sounds of air anxiety, and they only seem to you, and therefore less, ” said Olga Trofimovna.“ That's no less, but more, because there are still no sounds, but it already seems to me that they are, ” said Zvonarev.... Something thundered and with hissing and whistle collapsed down. The tenants fell to the floor, and the lower tenant, falling, covered his back with his knot. The old women lay on their stomachs, and young women lay on top of them. Zvonarev and Olga Trofimovna fell on each other and did not breathe. What was it? It turned out that Fedya Kulakov fell from above and now sat on a heap of old women and young women. He had already stopped hissing and whistling, he did not grimace and did not wave anything.“ Now I see that we have been bombed, ” said Zvonarev."Airy anxiety" Vsevolod Petrov
- Recently, the "Harmsian" stories of Petrov were published. The Harmsa space is separate, this is a kind of avoidance of reality, and then war is invading it. Can we judge by these stories of Petrov, how did Harms relate to reality?
- These are very complex literary texts. Reality invaded Harms. We meet there the situation of arrest, and the description of the then horror of communal apartments, a lot of things. He was completely suspended, of course. When they talk about the discarded shadow - on the one hand, it is far from the subject, but on the other hand, it is caused by this subject, there is a connection between them.
- How do you assess the degree of popularity of Harms in modern Russia?
- Harms has always been popular, even when it was not printed. In 1985, I read the Samizdat Tom Harms, from that moment my work began with manuscripts, I began to study it. It was a sip of fresh air when socialist realism reigned - and it was a form of protest. This was the pleasure of a new language, which was generally not known in Soviet Russia at all. Now Harms is a symbol of the very present, a symbol of unusualness, freshness, a symbol of the literature that is not looking for how to please, not only power, but in general some kind of tastes of people. Harms violates all expectations, all norms, all ideas about genres, about literature. So far, the pleasure of Harms, the popularity of Harms is alive, is hope, because this means that people value new, unusual, original, that people value the search for new ways in art, in life. Harms was a pessimist. He said: the first bomb will fall on our house. But at the same time, he saw a well -known path - he considered his work as a dialogue with eternity, as a form of immortality, for him this was the most important. Therefore, hope always remains. I think, while Harms is popular, not everything is lost.
- When you say that Harms is popular, is it really popular in narrow circles? Is it possible to say that Harms is popular among the people?
- Popular among the people who read. When I began to study in the 80s, even the 90s, if I asked if you knew Harms, people began to remember: this is the one that wrote children's poems. And then everyone became known to everyone not as a children's poet, but as a poet is a very adult. This is not about the assessment. There are ideas, although I do not really like them - literature of the first, second, third row, generals, ordinary ones. Harms in the front row, of course. People, no matter how much they treat him, understand that this is the literature of the highest class. This means that we must try to understand him, learn his language. We are now in general the number of readers is reduced, so we are only talking about those people for whom literature itself is value. And among them he is popular.
- He is unusual, not very understandable and not very patriotic. In modern Russia, such a combination causes discontent, which is accompanied by patriotic rhetoric. What do you think, the phenomenon of Harms and in today's Russia could be regarded as anti -state?
- No. The literature of the twentieth century has not yet been touched. Before talking, which writer is anti -state, antipatriotic, did not come. Moreover, in St. Petersburg, a year and a half ago, artists at the house where Harms lived, painted his portrait, and housing officials were indignant and began to demand that the inhabitants of the house have painted a portrait at their own expense. People turned to me - I was then a deputy of the Legislative Assembly - I publicly asked the governor a question if he could save this portrait, and he said that he loves Russian classics and Harms considers it a representative. The portrait remained. He is considered a classic. And then let's see what will happen - no one knows.
- Can't Harms become a victim of attacks from Stalin's fans?
- There are no such attacks, because Harms did not have texts directed against Stalin, he tried not to express his political position. The attitude towards Harms in this historical sense can still change, but only with all the literature together, if they suddenly begin to look for material for the separation of society, for inciting in a society of hatred. But partly this does not happen now, because literature does not have the influence and meaning that it possessed at the time when, as Mandelstam said, we were respected literature - they killed it for it, ”says Alexander Kobrinsky.
Gleb Morev:
- Harms's absurdism is perceived as a form of escapism - perhaps this (along with its declared apopoliticity and fear of the entire military) reason that it is very difficult to imagine actively anti -Soviet and, moreover, with a “machine gun” in his hands?
-I hope that the emphasis in your question is on the word “actively”, by which you apparently understand the readiness for some initiative and decisive action against the Soviet regime. This, indeed, is not about Harms. But he was configured, of course, anti-Soviet, and has been tuned for a long time, since the 1920s. Actually, the source of Harms of absurdism, as well as wider - the source of post -Soviet absurdism in general is a sense of the total madness of the surrounding sub -Soviet life, which fell out of all ideas about moral and reasonable. As formulated in 1927, Kuzmin closely in his late absurdist-ironic texts: “Who is insane: the whole world or our All-Russian Central Executive Committee?” The answer for both Kuzmin and Harms was, of course, the “All -Russian Central Executive Committee”.
