Russia recognizes DPR and LPR passports

Russia has recognized as valid identity documents issued by the authorities of the DNR and LNR. The corresponding decree was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In addition to passports, educational documents, birth and death certificates, marriage and divorce certificates, as well as car registration plates are recognized as valid.

On the basis of documents issued in the DPR and LPR, entry into Russia is allowed.

The decree states that the passports of the DPR and LPR are recognized temporarily - until the conflict in Donbass is resolved.

The decree was signed "in order to protect the rights and freedoms of man and citizen" with reference to the "generally recognized principles and norms of international humanitarian law."

• In early February, RBC published an investigation stating that Russian airlines, hotels and Russian Railways actually recognize the passports of the self-proclaimed republics of eastern Ukraine. Denis Pushilin, a representative of the DPR, said that such a passport can be used to cross the border with Russia.
• The lawyer of the American company Bryan Cave LLP, Cliff Burns, told RBC that the legal recognition of the DPR and LPR is the basis for imposing sanctions against Russian companies.
