In the 94th year of life, the Soviet and Russian mathematician, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Igor Shafarevich died. It is reported by REN TV with reference to the scientist's friends. They clarified that Shafarevich died on Sunday morning, February 19.
Shafarevich was born on June 3, 1923 in Zhitomir. In 1940, he graduated from the Mechanical and Mathematics Faculty of Moscow State University. In 1946, after the defense of the doctoral dissertation, he began work at the V.A. Steklov mathematical Institute.
The main works of the scientist are devoted to algebra, the theory of numbers and algebraic geometry. Shafarevich found the most general law of mutual deductions in the fields of algebraic numbers, which was to a certain extent the final stage of the 150-year history of arithmetic laws of reciprocity, dating back to Euler and Gaussian. The mathematician made a fundamental contribution to the development of Galois theory.
Shafarevich is known not only as a scientist, but also as a publicist, public figure and author of historical and philosophical publications. Since the late 1960s, he took part in social activities: he wrote statements and conducted press conferences in defense of the Russian Orthodox Church, together with Andrei Sakharov fought against the use of psychiatry as a means of political repression. In 1968, he signed “Letter 99” in the name of the USSR Minister of Health and the Prosecutor General of the USSR in defense of the Mathematics for the Moscow Psychiatric Hospital A.S. Yesenina-Wolpin.
In 1974, Shafarevich participated with Alexander Solzhenitsyn in the publication of the journalistic collection "from the blocks", writing three articles for him: "Socialism", "Separation or rapprochement?" And "does Russia have a future?" After the publication of the collection, he gave a press conference to foreign correspondents in Moscow. In 1975 he was fired from Moscow State University.
In 1982, Shafarevich published abroad and in the samizdat of the essophobia essay, in which he made frankly anti -Semitic positions. In 1992, more than 400 mathematicians published in notices of the American Mathematical Society an open collective appeal to Shafarevich with a request to reconsider the position set forth in the Russophobia. On July 16, 1992, the US National Academy of Sciences appealed to the scientist with a request to voluntarily abandon membership in it. The Council of the American Mathematical Society also issued a special statement in which he expressed his condemnation of "anti -Semitic works by I.R. Shafarevich." In 2003, Shafarevich himself left the National Academy of Sciences of the United States.
