Icelandic President Guðni Jóhannesson has spoken out against adding pineapple to pizza. Moreover, according to the Icelandic leader, if it were in his power, he would ban pizza with pineapple altogether. The president made these statements at a meeting with schoolchildren, one of whom asked how Jóhannesson felt about Hawaiian pizza .
Afterwards, the Icelandic press wondered how the disdain for pineapples might affect Guðni Jóhannesson's approval ratings. Currently, 97 percent of Icelanders are satisfied with his work.
Icelandic MP Smari McCarthy told Meduza that he agrees with his country's president. "There is no need to add pineapple to pizza," he said. At the same time, Iceland Review, the oldest English-language magazine about Iceland, writes that pineapple is the most popular pizza topping in the country.
The internet has been debating for years whether pineapple can be put on pizza. Now the debate is taking a new turn: it’s being discussed on Reddit and Twitter . A staffer at the Georgia student publication The Alchemist wrote a piece about pineapples and pizza and even took the trouble to conduct a survey among her friends. In 2016, a question on Quora asked why pineapple pizza is so controversial. Buzzfeed called it “the most offensive pizza.”
