Putin admitted the failure of the anti-doping system in Russia

Speaking at a meeting on preparations for the 2019 Universiade, the Russian President called for listening to the statements of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the report of the independent McLaren Commission, despite the fact that “mistakes” were made in their work. Vladimir Putin emphasized that this is “our fault.” He said that in Russian sports “there are reliable, identified cases of doping” and that they need to be recognized, investigated and those responsible identified.

The second part of the McLaren report was made public on December 9, 2016. It reported that about a thousand Russian athletes were involved in fraud with doping tests during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. In addition, employees of the Moscow anti-doping laboratory were accused of concealing positive samples.

After the publication, Russia lost the right to host the 2017 World Championships in bobsleigh and skeleton, and the Russian Biathlon Union decided not to host the World Cup in Tyumen this season. WADA later admitted that the evidence in the report was insufficient.
