1837 Arrest of Lermontov

180 years ago, on March 4, 1837, the young officer Mikhail Lermontov was arrested for the poem "The Death of a Poet", written after the death of Pushkin. The lines about "arrogant descendants" who "stand by the throne in a greedy crowd" were considered seditious. A "Case of impermissible verses written by the cornet of the Life Guards Hussar regiment Lermontov, and the distribution thereof by the provincial secretary Raevsky" was instituted. As a result, Lermontov was exiled to the Caucasus, and Svyatoslav Raevsky - to Petrozavodsk.
