1992 Resignation of Ayaz Mutalibov

25 years ago, on March 6, 1992, the first president of Azerbaijan, Ayaz Mutalibov, after the failures of the Azerbaijani army in Nagorno-Karabakh and the massacre in the village of Khojaly and under pressure from the Popular Front of Azerbaijan, announced his resignation. Speaker of the Popular Front Yakub Mammadov became acting president. On the same day, the parliament passed a law establishing a lifelong pension for Mutalibov, allocating bodyguards, a company car and a dacha for him, as well as declaring the person and property of the first president inviolable.
