The UN court began a hearing on the lawsuit of Ukraine against Russia

The UN International Court in The Hague began hearing in the lawsuit of Ukraine against Russia, the website of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reports. On the agenda is a request from Kiev on the introduction of temporary measures to protect the country's civilian population, the UNIAN Ukrainian Agency notes.

It is expected that the hearings will last four days. Ukraine will present arguments on Monday, March 6, and on Wednesday, March 8. Russia is on Tuesday, March 7, and on Thursday, March 9. The hearings will begin every day at 10:00 local time (12:00 in Moscow). According to UNIAN, in the first two days the parties must state their positions regarding the request, and in the next two - the final positions.

UNIAN clarifies that 16 judges are listening to the case under the chairmanship of the judge from France Ronnie Abraham. It is expected that according to the results of these hearings there will be a court ruling - or not the request of Kyiv for the introduction of temporary measures. This decision can be made from several weeks to months.

According to the media, in the request for the application of measures, Ukraine asks the court to oblige Russia to terminate the violation of international law. In particular, Ukraine appeals with a request to oblige Russia to ensure effective control over its border, stop the supply of weapons to Ukraine, stop supporting illegal armed groups that damage the civilian population of Ukraine, as well as refrain from any further acts of ethnic discrimination in Crimea.

During the hearing, Ukraine hopes to prove that Moscow violates international law. In turn, the Russian Federation denies the sending of troops or military equipment to the east of Ukraine, reminds Reuters .

A complaint of Kyiv to the International Court in the Hague was filed in January. The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine recently noted that the consideration of the claim will continue, regardless of the court decision upon request for the application of temporary measures.
