
The presidential election in 2018 is proposed to be held on March 18, on the anniversary of the annexation of Crimea. The State Duma speaker Vyacheslav Volodin supported this initiative, RBC reports .
"This is a Sunday day, and this is the day on which voting can be scheduled in accordance with our legislation. And the fact that this day coincides with a wonderful holiday, which we celebrate for several years, is very good," said Volodin.
The Chairman of the CEC Ella Pamfilova, meanwhile, believes that the elections are best held in April. "From the point of view of the elections, the better, the better. Mart is not the most successful month from the point of view of the elections. Since the elections are announced somewhere in December a hundred days. And the second half of December and long January holidays are knocked out a decent amount of time from the electoral cycle. Even a week or two will not interfere," she said .
In the Kremlin, there is still no position regarding the idea of holding elections on the anniversary of the annexation. “So far, any position on this score has not been formed, so it will take some time here, of course, to think about this initiative,” said Presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov. “Let's just say that some clarity will appear here in the foreseeable perspective.”
According to the Law "On Presidential Election", the first voting tour should take place on the second Sunday of the month in which the previous elections passed. Thus, in 2018, the presidential elections would have to be held on March 11. However, the day off will be postponed, and the elections according to the law should take place on the previous Sunday, March 4.
At the end of last week, the chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation Andrei Klishas and a member of the SF Anatoly Shirokov introduced to the State Duma a package of amendments to the law on the election of the president of the country. The document involves a wide reformatting of electoral legislation: a rejection of absenteeism, simplified procedure for observers and reduction of requirements for registration of candidates. In addition, the rules for determining the date of election should be changed. It is proposed to transfer the elections a week later, and not earlier than the second Sunday of the month, and not earlier.
