In the information space, the theme of scientific women is illuminated quite poorly, if she is not specially interested in her. Periodically you hear something like “I don’t know the names of scientists, except Maria Curie and Kovalevskaya ” or “Men created it all” (the authors of the last sayings usually do not create anything).
This, of course, is the problem of lack of knowledge, and in no way the real absence of scientists and discoveries made by them. Some educated people would say: “These are fools, you should not pay attention to them,” but not some exceptional layer of the population living in barrels, and most people are in such ignorance. This is the problem in itself, like any ignorance, and in addition, such prejudices detract from the significance and value of women as personalities - and their self -esteem. I believe that there is no point in accusing people of ignorance: in the 21st century, in order to be aware of the achievements of female scientists, it is not enough for them to ask them: for the usual request of Google, most likely, will give an article like “5 great women-scientists” on some senseless “female” portal. In order to dig up something, you will have to become a regulars of the libraries and plunge into English-speaking scientific works. That is, this knowledge is really inaccessible, if not elitist: specialists who will read scientific texts on the topic and sit in libraries are few, as well as readers of their works (most often future specialists), and those who will read foreign languages are even fewer. It turns out that in the United States and in the West, work, from which you can learn in detail about many women-research and their difficulties, are protected by copyright, and we are the property of the academic community. Thanks to the Sci-Hub and separately the developer of the site Alexander Elbakean for access to scientific information. Not so long ago, in her public, she wrote that on the website of the American physical society to Kapcha Einstein, Kapchu Curie was added , which could not but rejoice in many humanists.
From school, we remember a set of male names, and when pronouncing the word “ scientist ”, most people arise in the head of Einstein, Mendeleev and Landau - women from this pantheon, as it were, are supplanted. By the way, here is a good check: google the “ scientist” - get mostly owls with glasses . In the best case, the layman sees a dozen names of scientific women “from hypathy to Curie” and, of course, perceives them as an exception among a number of men. Many seriously think that women have lower intelligence and are less capable of mental work. For those who learn about many women scientists already at a conscious age, this discovery becomes the shock and awareness of their potential opportunities. Many feminists after their “excavations” make scientists of their idols simply from the fact that these are outstanding female scientists: it turns out there are a lot, and this comes to dissonance with everything that was taught before - this is how a kind of gender patriotism arises.
For some, the new knowledge turns into an awareness of the missed opportunities, because when everywhere they say everywhere and now that your place in the kitchen and the work of life - please your eyes - you involuntarily begin to believe and strongly doubt your abilities. How to resist such a rinse of brains, when even the rector of Moscow State University named after Lomonosov Viktor Sadovnichi at the initiation of freshmen of the mechanical and mathematics faculty said that the purpose of students of Mehmata is to become wives of mathematicians. What is there, Harvard President Lawrence Summers said in 2005 that the reason for the smaller number of women in science lies in their genetic characteristics (after such a person’s statement, the assumption about the equal rights achieved in the West) seems naive). However, the difference is that in the United States claims to the chauvinist attitude of President Harvard to women went beyond social networks .
The biggest problems here are a lack of knowledge, the so far no desire to weave the history of women into a universal canvas of history; And gender stereotypes, according to which men are more prone to intellectual classes. The latest installation can completely work as a self -retreating prediction. It is interesting that adolescents who will be educated according to masculine socialization will eventually begin to show the features of the mechanical-mathematical warehouse of the mind, as well as adolescents with Androgyn and feminine socialization -humanitarian-social and creative.
At the moment, the successes of women in science - with a huge number of talented female scientists - are perceived as an exception, a kind of anomaly. And the reasons for this lie in a combination of lack of knowledgewith cultural attitudes and gender representations in society.
Stereotypes are thinking templates that are used in cases of lack of knowledge and an acute attack of brain laziness. In 1993, the American historian Margaret Rossiter described one of these stereotypes about women-scientists and called his effect Matilda . The effect of Matilda is a systematic denial of women's contribution to science, diminishing the significance of their work and attributing the work of women to male colleagues. The effect of Matilda is closely related to the effect of Matthew , which was postulated by sociologist Robert Merton. The effect of Matthew is associated with the accumulated advantage: for example, well -known scientists get more trust than an unknown researcher, even if their work is similar or if they worked together.
During his preparation for the post-instrument study of the twentieth century, Margaret Rossiter dug in the reference work “American people of science” (American Men of Science) and came across five hundred biographies of women scientists. This amount struck her, and she decided to write a job about scientists in the United States until 1920, which she later published in the AMSCI scientific journal (before that Science and Sciam were rejected). Despite all the obstacles on the path to the formation and classes of science, the scientific interest Rossiter could not fit in one volume (as he could not fit in one volume list of women scientists of any civilized country). The works of Rossiter and other scientific articles of Western scientists in the vast majority of cases are paid, work in Russian is dusting in libraries and are studied only by narrow specialists.
The effect of Matilda can be seen in many cases throughout the history of mankind.
Martha Gauthier (and Turpen) made a considerable contribution to the opening of the Down syndrome , while this discovery was attributed to J. Ledon.
When Rosalin Yalou was awarded the Nobel Prize, some guests of the ceremony first thought that she had risen on stage as an accompanying her husband-laureate. Yalou rose on stage and made a speech about sexism in science. Later, she refused awards like “Woman of the Year” (because the talent does not apply to the floor) and criticized specialized women's prizes and organizations.
Netty Maria Stevens is one of the first American female geneticists, whose contribution to science has received official recognition. She and Edmund Bucher Wilson, independently of each other, became the first researchers of the X- and Y-chromosomes. After her death, T. Morgan wrote somewhat that the necrologist dulling her merits in the Science magazine, characterizing it not as a scientist, but rather as a laboratory assistant - this happens completely. It was Netti Stevens that was the first scientist to discover, exploring human cells, that women have two large x-chromosomes. Under the influence of the discovery of Stevens, Edmund Bucher Wilson, edited his work to include new data in it. In most modern biology textbooks, T. Morgan is called the first researcher of the chromosomes of the Fly Drosophila, but the fact that this study began and brought flies to the laboratory of Morgana Netti Stevens is usually missed.
There is an interesting fact related to Maria Sklodovskaya-Kuri, which can also be attributed to the effect of Matilda. Initially, the Nobel Committee did not nominate Mary for the Physics Award, but included in the list of nominees for her colleagues for work Pierre Curie and Henri Beckerl. The mathematician Magnus Mittag-Leffler said in a letter to Pierre Curie about this fact. The reaction followed immediately: Pierre Curie replied that it was impossible not to include Mary among the nominees, since she made a significant contribution of their joint work. As a result, Mary was also nominated.
Enheduanna , mathematician, astrologer, astronomer, poetess - the first famous author of the written source in history and the second technical author after Imphotep - architect of the first pyramid). She lived in Sumer in the south of Mesopotamia 2285 - 2250 BC.
With her colleagues, she created one of the first calendars who forms the basis of the Jewish calendar.
In India, in the middle of the 5th century BC, the famous philosopher lived, asking tricky questions to representatives of the religious public. She trained her son, Sabhiya, who later became a famous dialectic. It is also known about Bhadda, who walked along the settlements and called to the dispute, sticking a twig into the sand (who wanted to argue had to step on it).
Women in antiquity practically had no opportunity to engage in scientific and teaching activities. Exceptional figures, still having such an opportunity, were lost in the annals of history, like most ancient authors. Access to education and scientist work in ancient Greece and Rome had only citizens - and therefore, only men and mainly from wealthy families. Moreover, the reason why many ancient scientists could have enough science - slavery, which freed them from the need to make a living. Most of the women of ancient Greece were not only illiterate, but also did not have the right to sit at the same table with men (there was a special female half in the Hellenes' House), were considered movable property, perceived almost exclusively as vessels for childbearing (a woman’s romantic function arose only in the late era) - where to be scientists. The exceptions were heters - elite prostitutes: they were allowed to be enlightened so that their customers were interested in spending time with them. Socrates himself declared himself a student at the hether of Aspasia. It is also known that the mentor of Socrates was a certain dyotim, a mysterious philosopher. In law, women were forbidden to appear at public meetings, so some of them visited the Academy of Plato, dressed in men's clothes. One of these students was an axiopian who studied natural philosophy and physics, and after the death of Plato began to teach at the Academy. The Hippoparchia , representatives of the Kinikov School, which also often entered into disputes with philosophers and won. Aglagonika (V century BC) was an astronomer, foresaw the solar eclipses accurately up to an hour, like her contemporary Thales. However, many of us heard about Fales in the course of ancient philosophy, but not about Aglaonika.
Women in wealthy families of ancient Rome could teach literacy and simple subjects, depending on the level of family traditional. Women were allowed to make medicine - the name of the Roman professor of medicine Felista is known. However, legally the Romans were the property of their fathers and spouses. In general, the women of ancient Rome could dispose of the house, but did not have access to science and, in particular, philosophy. But there were exceptions, for example, women also had access to the Epicra School. Already in late ancient Greece and ancient Rome, women were allowed to study grammar and be teachers - but still not to engage in science.
One of the Socratic schools was the school of Aristippus Cyrensaiks. The daughter of Aristippus, Aret , after the death of his father, was elected head of the school. She taught physics, mathematics, philosophy and wrote about forty works, two of which were mathematical. Areta conveyed knowledge to her son - the metrodidact. Arignoti - according to rumors, the daughter of Pythagoras - wrote the work “On Arithmetic”, which has not reached us. In the list of sources of the Laertian Diogenes known to most of us, there are links to a certain Pamphil, which was the author of many historical and philosophical works.
In general, about thirty women taught and studied at the Pythagoras School. All representatives of this school were signed by the name of Pythagoras, so it is almost impossible to find out the contribution of individual members of the school. Aristoksen, a biographer of Pythagoras and a student of Aristotle, who studied with the Pythagoreans, wrote that Pythagoras perceived the teaching from Temikyoklei Delphic . Damo , the daughter of Pythagoras, was a teacher of the theory of Pythagoras in a Kroton school. According to the astronomer of heminus of the Rhodes (V century BC), the lady belongs to the creation of a tetrahedron and cube. Theater, the wife of Pythagoras, was the author of mathematical and medical works. After the death of her husband, she became the head of his school. The daughter of Damo, Vitali, was also a famous mathematician. The last Pythagorea was Hypatia (IV-V centuries), an astronomer, a mathematician and philosopher, who led the school. A Alexandrian gipatia invented a device for determining the density of liquid and astrolabia for measuring the coordinates of celestial bodies. The death of hypathy at the hands of Christian-fanatics coincided with the fall of the Roman Empire and the beginning of the Middle Ages.In the Middle Ages, in science and education, men who not only monopolized the education system, but also limited women's access to it dominated. However, even in this gloomy period of history, women in Europe had the opportunity to engage in medicine. In the XI century, a medical school was created in Solerno in southern Italy, in which women studied and taught - “ladies from Solerno”, as they were called. By the middle of the XI century, this school has acquired a high reputation and is often considered as the first university in Europe. Historical sources provide information that in Italy in the XIII century selected women (there were very few of them) underwent a course of study and even taught at universities.
The foci of intellectual culture in the Middle Ages were monasteries. Women did not have access to scientific studies, including the study of jurisprudence: they were allowed to study only religious and mystical works and some ancient authors. For many of them, the monastery was an alternative to undesirable marriage. Abbasa was also the Bingengen Hildegard (end of the XI-XII century). In the middle of the XII century, Hildegard wrote her works on natural science and medicine. Since 1155, she traveled a lot around the country, lectures on medicine and theology. Its authorship belongs to the encyclopedia of natural history - “Physika” and the treatise “Causae et curae”, dedicated to the theory of medicine and drugs. Trotula is an Italian physician (XI-XII century), the author of the works that began to publish after her death and attributed to the authors of the male. To maintain the version of male authorship, the very existence of Trotula was questioned.
One of the oldest universities in the world, founded in 961-al-Azhaf-is located on the territory of modern Egypt. Women were also accepted into it. However, it was a spiritual university. During the professionalization of the education and distribution of secular knowledge, universities began to appear and develop, more similar to higher educational institutions in our understanding - for example, Bologna University, created in 1088. For these universities to women, access was closed - without exception, as in the days of antiquity - hence the huge gap in the education of men and women in the Middle Ages.
So far, formal education was not available to women, they received knowledge in the process of self -education or from their fathers, brothers, husbands, often cooperating with them in their scientific research. Such cooperation was the only form in which women could realize their interest in science.
Interest in the natural sciences of Anna Conway (1631–1679) was supported by her brother. The book of Conway “ The Principles of the Most Ancient and Modern Philosophy ”, published for the first time according to her manuscripts by Francois Van Geltmont (famous philosopher) after her death, became the basis of the new philosophy of the Libel, which had a strong impact on the development of natural philosophy of the XVII century. The ideas of Anna Conway are most often attributed to Van Helmont, who was the editor and publisher of her work (we recall the “Matilda effect”).
Maria Margaret Vinkelmann (nee Kirch, 1670–1720) is one of the first astronomers of his time, the author of the work “Conjunction of the Sun with Saturn and Venus and Jupiter and Saturn” - attributed her to the discovery of the comet to the spouse. After the death of her husband, she was refused in any place at the Berlin Academy of Sciences.
The astronomer Carolina Lucretius Gershel (1750–1848) worked with her brother William, appointed by the astronomer at the court of George III. William Gershel took his sister as an assistant and a cleaning lady, but soon she began to be interested in astronomical observations and opened three new nebulae. William helped to study the basics of mathematics as sister and already in 1786-1797 she opened eight comets and several new foggy.
