Derek Walcott died

Today, March 17, in his house on the island of St. Lucia at the age of 87, the poet and playwright, the Laureate of the Nobel Prize in Literature Derek Walcott died.

Derek Walcott was born in Saint Lucia in 1930, in 1953 he moved to Trinidad with his parents, where he was educated at Santa Maria's college, graduated from the University of West Indies in Kingston on Yamaika.

He lived on St. Lucia, in New York and Boston, where he taught literature and writing at the university and founded his own theater.

He began to be published in the late 1940s. The author of dozens of poetic collections, plays and essays, as well as the epic poem “Omeros” (1990) based on the “Odyssey” Homer, whose action was transferred to the Caribbean Sea. Laureate of many literary awards, including T.S. Eliot (2011).

In 1992, the Nobel Prize in Literature "For Bright Poetic Creativity, performed by historicism and the result of devotion to culture in all its diversity, was awarded Derek Walkott.
