One of the most popular children's programs in the world, Sesame Street, will feature a character with autism for the first time. According to Deadline.com, the new character's name is Julia.
She will make her screen debut in April when Elmo and Abby Cadabby introduce her to Big Bird. Julia first appeared two years ago in the e-book Sesame Street and Autism: Seeing the Amazing in All Children.
Julia will be played by puppeteer Stacy Gordon, whose son is diagnosed with autism. She said she wished such a character had appeared a few years earlier, when her child was watching Sesame Street.
According to one of the authors of the program, Christine Ferraro, when creating Julia, they consulted with organizations that deal with autism issues, teachers and families with special children. This helped to better portray a character with autism and tell preschoolers about this disease in a more accessible way.
