The head of the French Interior Ministry resigned due to suspicions of fictitious hiring of daughters.

French Interior Minister Bruno Le Roux has resigned amid suspicions that he fictitiously hired his daughters as assistants and paid them their salaries.

Le Roux announced his resignation after prosecutors began investigating allegations of bogus employment on March 21. In addition, on this day, the minister was summoned to give explanations by the head of government, Bernard Kaznev, reports The Guardian.

According to media reports, in 2009-2016, Le Roux, holding the position of a deputy of the National Assembly, repeatedly hired his two daughters as assistants. In total, he signed 24 short-term contracts with them, under which the girls received 55 thousand euros.

Journalists noticed that one of the contracts was signed for the period when Le Roux's daughter was doing an internship at Yves Rocher in Belgium.

• Charges on a similar occasion were brought against the French presidential candidate from the right and centrists Francois Fillon. He is suspected of hiring his wife and children as assistants and paying them a salary, although they did not actually do the work.
• Bruno Le Roux, a member of the Socialist Party, has served as French interior minister since December 2016.
