
Researchers from the German aerospace center (DLR) created an artificial sun designed for research in the field of hydrogen, which can be used as environmentally friendly fuel.
According to Engadget , a system created as part of the SynLight project consists of 149 bright xenon spotlights, which are usually used on sets. These lamps are combined into a design similar to bee honeycombs and focused on a area of 20*20 cm in size. The cost of creating a huge lamp was 3.8 million euros, and the electricity volume consumed by it would be enough for the average German household for a year.
During the inclusion of the artificial sun, the temperature at the focusing point of the spotlights reaches 3500 degrees Celsius, and the light intensity is 10,000 times higher than the intensity of the light of the real sun. According to the representative of the DLR, if a person entered the room at the time of the artificial sun, he would immediately burn.
The goal of the SynLight project is to create a technology for splitting water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen using concentrated solar energy. In case of success, mankind will be able to receive hydrogen in quantities sufficient for use as fuel for cars and aircraft, the burning of which will not be accompanied by the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
