Scottish Parliament approves new independence referendum

The Scottish Parliament on March 28 supported a new referendum on independence from the UK. The proposal of the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was supported by 69 deputies, 59 voted against.

Scottish Secretary of State David Mundell has said that the country will not negotiate a new referendum with Scotland until the EU exit process is completed, that is, according to The Guardian, until the 2020s.

Sturgeon announced her intention to hold a referendum between the fall of 2018 and the spring of 2019.

• In 2016, in the referendum on the UK leaving the European Union, the majority of the inhabitants of Scotland voted against, but the Brexit supporters won by a narrow margin.
• Following the signing of the Brexit Act by the Queen of Great Britain in March 2017, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced preparations for a new independence referendum. The British government opposed these plans.
• The first referendum to leave the UK was held in Scotland in September 2014. Then 55.3% of those who voted wanted to remain in the kingdom.
