The ECHR ordered Russia to pay compensation for the death of a demonstrator in Dagestan

The European Court of Human Rights ruled that the Russian authorities must pay 50,000 euros for moral damages to Yarmet Nagmetov, a resident of Dagestan. His son died as a result of police actions during the dispersal of a rally in 2006. This is stated in the decision of the ECtHR, posted on the website of the organization.

According to RBC , the father of the deceased believes that the tragedy occurred due to the use of special equipment by the police during the dispersal of the rally, and the Russian authorities did not properly investigate the circumstances of his death.

A protest action against corruption, during which Murad Nagmetov died, took place in one of the villages of Dagestan in April 2006. Its participants demanded the resignation of the head of the district.

To disperse the rally, OMON officers used firearms and other special equipment, such as smoke bombs and stun grenades. As a result of the dispersal of the rally, three demonstrators died: Nagmetov died on the spot, two more - Elman Akhmedkhanov and Zeynal Gadzhimov - died in the hospital. According to human rights activists, the police destroyed all the videos of the incident, and they also reported torture and insults of the detainees.

According to the court decision, compensation to Yarmet Nagmetov must be paid within three months. The court's decision notes that the payment of monetary compensation cannot be recognized as just reparation for the pain of the loss of the applicant's son, but the panel of judges made such a decision “for lack of a better option”.
