1882. Korney Chukovsky was born

135 years ago, March 31, 1882, Korney Ivanovich Chukovsky (Nikolai Vasilievich Kornechukov), writer, critic, literary critic and translator was born. During the Great Patriotic War, Chukovsky, according to the NKGB agent, said in a friendly circle: "I wish Hitler’s death and the collapse of his delusional ideas with all my heart. With the fall of the Nazi despotism, the world of democracy will face the Soviet despotion. We will wait."

In 1968, Chukovsky prepared for the press a retelling of the Bible for children in the collection "Babylonian tower and other ancient legends". However, the publication was prohibited, and the circulation was destroyed. In the last years of his life, Chukovsky, awarded official honors, maintained connections with critics of the regime, in particular, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, and in 1966 he signed the appeal of 25 cultural figures and science to Brezhnev against Stalin's rehabilitation.
