Russia calls resolution on chemical attack in Syria premature

The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting on the chemical attack in the Syrian city of Khan Sheikhoun, which killed more than 70 people.

The United Kingdom, the United States and France submitted a draft resolution on Syria to the UN Security Council. At the meeting, Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Vladimir Safronov said that it was premature to adopt a resolution that provides for the possibility of imposing sanctions against the Syrian authorities.

According to the diplomat, the draft resolution was "prepared in a hurry and is characterized by extreme negligence."

The draft resolution clarifies the obligations of the Syrian government to cooperate with the UN and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). The Syrian authorities are to provide organizations with the names of helicopter squadron commanders and details of air operations, as well as flight plans and flight log data for April 4.

On April 4, the village of Khan Sheikhoun in the south of the Syrian province of Idlib was subjected to a chemical attack. The attack killed at least 72 people, including children. Human rights activists working in the conflict zone blamed the attack on the Syrian authorities.

At the same time, according to the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, the videos published in the Western media about the consequences of the use of chemical weapons in the Syrian province of Idlib are staged.
