
The Russian programmer Peter Levashov was detained in Spain at the request of the FBI for the newsletter of spam using Botnet. This is stated on the official website of the US Department of Justice.
As follows from the document, Levashov, presumably, since 2010 controlled the Kelihos botnet, and the programmer was detained during the operation to destroy the network, which started on April 8.
Earlier, the Spanish police reported that the United States is suspected by Levashov of involvement in hacker attacks related to the US presidential election. In the report of the Ministry of Justice Levashov is mentioned only as the head of Kelihos.
Levashov was detained during a vacation in Barcelona on April 9.
The Russian is called the creator of Botnet, whose network included 109 thousand infected computers. According to information specializing in the topic of hackers and protecting the information of journalist Brian Krebs, Levashov has been providing paid spam newsletters since 1999.
Botnet is a network of computers infected with virus, which is most often used to send spam.
