The head of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Valeria Gontareva left her post. She announced this at a press conference on April 10. The event is broadcast in the YouTube channel of the regulator.
According to Gontareva, on May 10, she sent her statement to President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko. Gontareva added that she would leave the post earlier if the Verkhovna Rada votes for her earlier resignation. She emphasized that the composition of the NBU board and the regulator course due to its resignation will not change.
Gontareva indicated that for the first time the resignation of the head of the National Bank of Ukraine would not be a political decision. She expressed the hope that she would replace a “professional and independent person”.
The press conference in the National Bank was announced on the morning of April 10, after the sources of Interfax and Bloomberg reported that Gontareva filed a statement by Poroshenko. Messages about this in the regulator and the presidential administration were not commented.
On April 6, the Ukrainian media reported that Gontareva signed a resignation statement and considers her mission as the head of the NBU executed. In turn, the regulator refuted these messages, noting that Gontareva simply "confirmed the intention to leave the post of head of the NBU over time."
Gontareva headed the NBU in June 2014, becoming the first woman in this post. She was repeatedly criticized for the policy pursued. So, some deputies of the Verkhovna Rada accused Gontarev of state treason after the devaluation of hryvnia and the reduction of the gold and foreign exchange reserves of Ukraine.
In early April, it became known that the National Anti -Corruption Bureau of Ukraine checks the legality of spending funds allocated to the NBU for refinancing local banks. In Nabu, the volume of abuse of billions of hryvnias was estimated. At a briefing on April 10, Gontareva stated that she was ready to report for every hryvnia aimed at refinancing, and emphasized that all charges of withdrawing these funds abroad are unfounded.
